This month's song is the essence of what rare groove is all about -- it's super rare, and what a groove. And jazz music's Jimmy Smith, the king of the Hammond organ, is no stranger to rare groove fans who scramble for his nearly 50 albums on the Blue Note label or his nearly 40 releases for Verve. It's especially the Verve pieces, put out in the late 60s-early 70s that contain some of the funkier groove-jazz tunes that we all enjoy.
But perhaps some of Smith's most searing work is contained on 2 albums that people either don't know about or will never see because they're so scarce. In the mid-70s, Jimmy Smith released Paid In Full (1974) and Jimmy Smith '75 on Mojo records, a label that was owned and run by him. These records were only available at his concerts and through mail order. And they feature some of the most smokin' groove-oriented jams you'll ever hear as evidenced by the inclusion of Paid In Full's "Can't Get Enough" on Luv 'N Haight's 1992 rare groove compilation of the same name.
The tune I've chosen from Jimmy Smith '75 is a new favorite -- a mellow and subtly funky, yet danceable cover of the Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Making Love." You'll love the irresistably schmaltzy way Jimmy recites the chorus (ala Barry White), as if he wishes he could sing it. You'll really dig the whole thing. In fact, this is 10 times better than Bob James' version of the same song that DJs swear by. Enjoy!
