CHRYSANTHEMUM GROWERS CALENDAR
CULTURAL NOTES FOR
MAY AND JUNE

by Les Smith as printed in Chrysanthemum News, May/June 2001.
Chrysanthemum News is the newsletter of the West Australian Chrysanthemum Society Inc.

With the event of the shows the chrysanthemum season is just about over for another year.

How did you finish?

Were you happy with your plants and blooms?

Perhaps a little less fertilizer or more adjustment to your stopping dates, try bud bags or boxes for covers.
Now is the time to weed out any plants that did not make the grade, straight into the rubbish bin and no second thoughts, it's not worth all the time, effort, fertilizer and water if they don't produce the goods. Once you have cut all your blooms and marked all the good plants for next year's stock remember to keep up with the snail pellets and sprays, insect and fungicide.

To ensure clean healthy cuttings also make sure your plants are watered. It doesn't take long for them to dry out, especially in pots.
Don't think that after the show there's nothing to do but watch the footy and all the replays. Wrong!

A little care and attention now will make things better at the start of next season.
Perhaps loosen the soil in the pots for better drainage or even repot into some fresh potting mix. Cut back any woody growth at soil level.

Keep the weeds in check, tidy all your stakes, take your wife out to dinner for being patient through the season and if there is nothing else to do write something to the Editor.
