THE=20
MEANING OF LIFE IS A STRATEGY FOR GETTING =
NICE=20
SURPRISES
Hi. My name is Tom Horn.
That's me in the =
picture. You'd=20
never guess I was 56 years old would you? Well would you? Anyway, let's =
not=20
argue about this. The fact is I've written a full length ebook and a =
series of=20
FREE articles on the nature of reality. Now I fully realize that anyone =
who=20
writes about reality is generally accused of being unrealistic and is =
urged to=20
get out more. If you had that knee-jerk reaction, I'm hoping you =
can see=20
through it and realize that it was just your way of saying that you know =
all the=20
important things about life and certainly don't want to be bothered with =
something unfamiliar. But do you really know the secret of life? My =
articles=20
will pitch an unfamiliar view of everyday existence to you and there is =
no way=20
of knowing whether you can take hold of it without letting it slip =
through your=20
fingers. If you can grasp and hold on to what I tell you, there is one =
serious=20
question you must ask yourself. "Do the explanations I have been given =
match my=20
experience of life? Could they be realistic?" If the answer is yes, or =
maybe,=20
then perhaps it is your outlook on life that is unrealistic. How =
strange! You=20
thought I was at fault and it turned out to be you. Who cares, because =
this=20
places you at the threshold of a more profitable approach to =
life.
There really is a =
different way of=20
understanding the world. When you come into this new knowledge you are =
said to=20
have undergone a paradigm shift. It is like 'waking up from sleep'. You =
might=20
say that the whole of humanity is 'asleep' and needs to be 'woken up'. =
You need=20
to be 'woken up' from a state of illusion into a more realistic view of =
the=20
world. Paradigm shifts are common when we are very young. We eventually =
find out=20
that we were not brought into the world by a stork and left under a =
gooseberry=20
bush; that there is no Father Christmas; that our favourite heroes, =
celebrities=20
and authorities have 'feet of clay'. There are also paradigm shifts to =
be=20
experienced when we pass through the phases of life: from childhood into =
adolescence, on through adulthood, middle age, old age and finally =
death. =20
If accepted in the right spirit, the paradigm shifts that we assent to =
can be=20
extremely beneficial to our physical, mental and spiritual health. When =
we fall=20
asleep or emerge from sleep, these paradigm shifts also benefit us. Just =
try=20
going without sleep and find out how rapidly you deteriorate. Paradigm =
shifts=20
are good medicine and I'm offering you a glimpse of the most important =
one for=20
free.
However, when we get =
older, we=20
become entrenched in our world-views and are reluctant to give them up. =
We=20
resist necessary paradigm shifts and this is why we age mentally and =
physically=20
and why we wind up with strategies for living that are really outgrown =
and do=20
not work anymore. The right paradigm shifts are certainly good for you, =
but,=20
like all the best medicines, many don't taste very nice. You may find my =
articles to be unpalatable. In this case you may be moved to 'consume' =
something=20
sweet, easy, mundane and valueless, like a newspaper, magazine or cheap=20
novel. You see, I'm looking for people who are prepared to have =
their=20
outlook on life put under a little pressure. You may consider your =
outlook to be=20
'watertight', but if you have ever felt the need to defend or promote =
it, could=20
this really be your attempt to stem a few 'leaks'? The articles will =
expose=20
those 'leaks' for you. What could be more helpful? You might wind up =
realizing=20
that the game of life cannot be won unless the rules are known. Most =
people=20
imagine that there are no rules in life. But those people are 'blind'. =
You will=20
read about some of the rules or hidden laws of nature in action. The =
content may=20
well be somewhat controversial, or even, dare I say it, shocking to your =
system=20
of thought; but I did not invent the rules of life. But make no mistake, =
it is a=20
knowledge of these laws of existence or a lack of it which decides =
whether you=20
lead a life of folly or a life filled with nice surprises.
All of the above =
articles can be=20
read online - just click on the titles. To save money, click on the =
titles in=20
quick succession and then read them offline from your 'History' cache. =
They are=20
also available in ebook format. Unfortunately, my webhost will not allow =
downloads of exe or zip files - but I will email it to you on request:

Now, if you had the =
choice, I am=20
pretty certain you would choose to be empowered. But personal =
empowerment for=20
most means direct control over something. It means using will power, =
cleverness=20
or competitiveness to control nature or your own life or the lives of =
others.=20
This type of power is very enticing, but it does not lead to lasting =
happiness,=20
stable conditions or peace of mind. Very few people realize that the =
only=20
=91power=92 worth having is the subtle ability to use self-control to =
generate nice=20
surprises. THIS IS THE SECRET OF LIFE.
Science, reason and common sense =
are selling=20
us short with their description of the world. It's not really their =
fault=20
because this opinionated trio has a blind spot and this unfortunate =
condition=20
has led to the spread of a fundamental misconception about life. It is a =
misunderstanding that is propelling humanity, and each of us =
individually,=20
towards some very nasty surprises indeed. The mistaken assumption is =
that the=20
whole of everyday life is unwinding through predictable chains of =
causes=20
and effects. This influences you the reader of these web pages. It means =
that,=20
according to common knowledge, you could not avoid reading these words. =
This is=20
because a potentially knowable chain of causes and effects, starting =
when the=20
world began, has led to this very moment when you are reading. Common =
rational=20
understanding says that all events are predictable given enough =
information at a=20
prior instant in time, together with the laws governing how things =
interact. All=20
that is needed is enough data plus a computer as big as God and there =
need be no=20
surprises in the world. This is the basic delusion perpetrated by =
science,=20
reason and common sense.
A part of the world is indeed =
predictable and=20
this was described to us at school and we later harnessed it to create =
all the=20
technological things we value so much. But another part, although it =
appears to=20
be full of routines, is, in truth, inherently surprising. Living things, =
in=20
their relationships, participate daily in this unpredictable, =
self-organizing=20
and therefore magical branch of reality. Your life might seem routine, =
but a=20
principle of surprise is always stalking you. Do you take this into =
account? If=20
you do not, you may be living your life on the basis of any or all of =
the=20
following: rational planning, an imposed code of ethics, the dictate of=20
circumstances, horoscopes, the instincts that promote the replication of =
your=20
genes or any number of ideas or ideologies that are replicating =
themselves, as=20
you read these words, through the human race. Whichever applies, you =
will be=20
stalked by negative surprises.
Consider the following proverbs: =
=91Pride comes=20
before a fall=92; =91Familiarity breeds contempt=92; =91For every gain =
there is a loss=92;=20
=91The road to hell is paved with good intentions=92. These sayings and =
many others,=20
cannot be predicted or proven like scientific laws. But they do show how =
life in=20
the round produces surprising outcomes. As the proverb says, if you are =
a proud=20
person you will be stalked by the surprise of humiliation. Of course the =
ultimate negative surprises that are stalking you and me are sickness =
and death.=20
Forget the 'survival of the fittest' because there are no survivors on =
this=20
planet. Perhaps you think this is a bit pessimistic. Well, please =
remember that=20
a pessimist is really an optimist who has been given the facts. A =
comedian once=20
made the stark Truth a lot easier to face when he asked if anyone in his =
audience knew what the trouble with life was. No-one did know and the =
jocular=20
fellow informed everyone that: =91The trouble with life is that we=92ll =
all be lucky=20
to get out of it alive!=92
Proverbs are patterns =
of=20
development that repeat themselves at all times and places. It is a =
strange fact=20
that many of the affairs of daily life self-organize into living trends. =
People=20
indulge in living trends without realizing what they are doing. There =
are two=20
outcomes. Either the trend quickly encounters a compensating resistance =
and life=20
gets tough - (Sod=92s law: if anything can go wrong, it will), or the =
trend=20
fulfils an evolutionary pattern which ends in a surprise, usually an =
unpleasant=20
one. Because the conscious state of the person is a part of the living =
trend,=20
the tendency itself cannot be investigated scientifically. The outcomes =
can only=20
be experienced in a surprising way. This is a law of nature and it is in =
addition to those of science and predictability. When it is taken into =
account=20
through the use of a simple and easy strategy a person gets to live in a =
constant state of amazement at the nice things that just =
happen.
You see, because =
everyday life is=20
inherently surprising, no one can do anything about anything - directly. =
This is=20
because all lasting good has to emerge as a surprise. The future really =
isn=92t up=20
to us alone as the experts say. It is as if there were different types =
of=20
self-organizing =91power=92 or disembodied =91intent=92 in this world =
that create=20
surprises. When you predict these 'powers' and look for them, they =
aren't there.=20
But by behaving in a way that you wouldn't imagine could be worthwhile, =
you can=20
tap into a type of =91power=92 that will give you more from life than =
you put in.=20
You can obtain magical leverage in everything you do. This is the secret =
of life=20
- the indispensable secret of personal empowerment.
It is essential to act on a =
Strategy for Getting =
Nice=20
Surprises if a life of =91blind=92 folly and =
negative surprises=20
is to be avoided. To rely on strategies of predictability is, quite =
frankly, a=20
folly. When your eyes are opened to the self-organizing situations of =
daily=20
life, you will be very keen to modify your awareness and intent in order =
to make=20
pleasant surprises more probable. You will finally understand what it =
means to=20
be empowered. It does not matter what your condition in life is, a =
strategy for getting =
nice=20
surprises will empower you. No politician can do =
this for=20
you, no system of education or physical exercise, no course in problem =
solving,=20
no orthodox religion, no cult, no fashion, nobody you know, including =
your wise=20
old grandparents, can empower you the way a strategy for getting nice =
surprises=20
will. Even the widespread mind-controlling cults of reason, sanity and =
science=20
cannot empower you. Neither can money, information technology or the =
most=20
sophisticated tools ever invented. Only by deploying a magical, but =
realistic=20
strategy, will you be surprised to find events in your life coming right =
of=20
their own accord. The method is ancient, it is universal, it is =
powerful, it is=20
out of control and, look-out, it is coming your way!
Imagine that a heavy =
book fell on=20
your head. If it happened it would surely be a negative surprise and you =
would=20
probably be moved to reflect ruefully on how it was that you were =
standing in=20
the wrong place at the wrong time. Reason, sanity and science would call =
it a=20
chance event, forgetting that these are predictable given enough =
information=20
ahead of time. But Uncommon Knowledge says=20
that the world self-organizes and things happen in ways that the human =
mind can=20
never pin down. All I can say is that those who practice a Strategy for Getting =
Nice=20
Surprises successfully will not be caught standing =
around=20
waiting to get clobbered by the world=92s unpleasant surprises. This is =
because=20
they have =91power=92, they are blessed, they have luck, 'life', =
charisma, spirit -=20
call it what you will. Most human beings, including myself, tend to =
fritter away=20
the little that they have.
Let me say now that these =
web pages and=20
a new ebook are designed to fall on you - but lightly, on your =
understanding and=20
world view. In this case there is no knowing what your response might =
be. For=20
example, the mental process whereby you might choose to part with some =
cash for=20
the ebook is unknowable and therefore your decision must appear as a =
surprise.=20
All I can do is reveal some of the hidden laws of nature, together with =
their=20
principle of surprise and wait. Eventually, you, the reader, may become=20
interested in the possibility of a different kind of life. But what is=20
'interest' anyway? I give away a little special knowledge and, in some =
people,=20
'interest' naturally emerges, whilst others turn away with a yawn or a =
gesture=20
of frustration. There is no way in this world to predict if and when =
'interest'=20
will arise. The latter is a surprising phenomenon that rises up, all by =
itself,=20
from the foundation of 'knowledge'. Hence the term 'knowledge is=20
power'.
But if you do find =
yourself=20
developing an interest in regenerating your own life or in 'saving the =
world',=20
then the right way is set out in parts 1 and 2 of the new ebook=20
entitled:

A reader emailed to say:
I would like to let you know that I have finished your =
book=20
"Uncommon Knowledge And The Strategy For Getting Nice Surprises", and=20
I consider it is a true masterpiece. Honestly, this is the =
best book=20
that I have ever read in my life!
I am happy to =
inform you=20
that the book itself is a leveraged item. It may not be written in the =
finest=20
style and, almost certainly, it will not contain the last word on the =
subject of=20
surprise. But the book has leverage because the personal use value of =
the=20
uncommon knowledge it contains far exceeds the purchase price. In fact =
you can=20
obtain the full version for less than the cost of a meal in a restaurant =
and get=20
a lifetime=92s =91food=92 for thought. If the special knowledge is =
properly =91digested=92=20
and acted upon, the transformation of your life will only be a surprise=20
away.
Uncommon Knowledge=20
and the Strategy for Getting Nice Surprises is =
approximately=20
87,000 words in length.
You will discover the following in the=20
ebook:
=
A text that=20
will turn everything you ever thought about life on its head. =
A new, but=20
realistic, world-view - one that cannot be grafted on to an orthodox=20
outlook. =
An=20
opportunity to reject the outmoded world view in favour of one that =
actually=20
works. =
An=20
explanation of the mysterious process whereby reality conspires against =
every=20
person alive. It's the conspiracy theory to end all conspiracy =
theories. =
The=20
ultimate subversive strategy for non-subversives - as described, in a=20
metaphorical language, in ancient religious texts from all over the =
world. Take=20
these religious tomes literally, as if they were the reporting of =
historical=20
events, and their real message will have missed your head by about a=20
yard. =
Details of=20
the myth we are all participating in on this marvelous but 'dark'=20
planet. =
A journey=20
that will take you to the boundaries of science and then beyond into the =
real=20
world of everyday life. =
Knowledge=20
of the different 'levels' of functioning in everyday life and how =
different=20
rules apply to each 'level'. =
The way=20
daily life self-organizes into patterns that incorporate a principle of=20
surprise. =
How living=20
trends lead to negative surprises. =
How the=20
world was made after the 'big bang'. =
How the=20
self-organizing 'pattern' that made the world is at the 'foundation' of =
our own=20
lives. =
The real=20
significance of your own awareness and intent. =
The secret=20
of 'consciousness' and 'life'. =
Why the=20
average person fails to be self-commanding. =
Why free=20
will is rarely used and when it is used, it is usually in the wrong =
way. =
The querk=20
of human psychology that makes us project imperfect knowledge onto the=20
world. =
Who your=20
real enemies are. (Forget the terrorists and the criminals and the =
politicians=20
who, without fail, do the wrong thing.) =
Why=20
over-development is a folly. =
The golden=20
opportunity or living challenge that life tries to present to us =
all. =
Insight=20
into why everyone fails to meet the essential challenge of life and the=20
consequences that follow as a result. =
An=20
alternative way to make things happen. How to participate in the real =
magic of=20
being alive. =
Knowledge=20
of the universe's two subtle guidance systems and how to avoid the one =
that=20
leads to negative surprises and use the other to get to where you want =
to be in=20
life. =
How to=20
accumulate 'power' or 'intent'. =
A new=20
perspective on your own problems and the troubles of the world. =

Getting Nice Surprises work for you.

Well, whether you =
realize it or=20
not, a =91crossroads=92 has appeared on whatever 'path' you are =
travelling.You can=20
turn one way and walk back into your apparently predictable life. Or you =
can=20
take the uncertain road that leads to the surprising life you were born =
to lead.=20
The fact that you have come with me this far means that you could go =
either way.=20
Since your decision is in no way preordained, you must now participate =
in the=20
surprising life of this wonderful self-organizing world. I have led you =
to this=20
parting of the ways and, as a gesture of good will, I am placing in your =
hands a=20
powerful gift for use in such an archetypal situation. The gift is not =
will=20
power, reasoning, imagination, or anything of that kind. It is simple =
CHOICE.=20
The living trends that control the lives of everyone give you no choice. =
They=20
make you think and feel as if there were only one way to respond. A =
genuine=20
decision is probably required here and I am truly sorry if this is =
stressful.=20
Whilst you can certainly be 'spoiled for choice', the simple rejecting =
of one=20
'road' in favor of another is an act of =91power=92. Good luck to =
you.

Postscript: It is easy =
to surprise=20
a person negatively. Simply creep up behind them, make a loud noise and =
say=20
'Your strategy for getting nice surprises does not work'. However, this =
would=20
not be a True surprise because the perpetrator would know about it in =
advance.=20
There is a self-organizing 'power' in the universe that is friendly and =
good.=20
This disembodied 'intent' is always trying to subvert the one-sided =
living=20
trends to spring its True surprises on all the elements of a given =
situation.=20
Just as this 'power' causes the beautiful golden flower to emerge from =
the grave=20
of the cold damp earth in the spring, so it will induce nice surprises =
to emerge=20
out of any bad circumstance. For the latter to happen, a special =
discipline, a=20
Strategy =
For Getting Nice=20
Surprises, is certainly necessary.
