Welcome to India

[Food in India] [New to India]
[Photos from India] [Health] [What to buy,how to bargain]

India is the land of opposites, beautiness and extreme. Whatever you want to do it's possible in India. Think of nature: You have the warm, dry and dusty dessert, the cold snow capped Himalay, the sunny beaches and the green palms in south.
If you like temples they are scattered all over the country.

A religious melting pot. Hinduism and Buddhism being born here, India having the biggest population of muslims, Christianity forming the major population in Nagaland and sikkhism having it's base in Indian.

15 major languages are spoken here and ap. 900 dialects. 20% of the worlds languages are spoken in India !

The indian population shows big variation. The rajastani women with her colourfull cloth and heavy jewellery, the thin nepali looking girl plucking tea in the high and humid mountains of Darjeerling, the small dark humour loving bengali, the friendly proud sikh and the blue eyed kashmirian.

Travel in India

Even for the experienced traveller, India can be quite a culture shock. Not just because everything is different(the spicy food, the hasle, the way you buy things) but also because you can't take in India in pieces. It's al at once ! And you end up in rather extreme situations.

India is not a country you just see. It's something you smell(believe me !), feel and taste. It's the land of extreme beautiness and it's the land with so big problems and human destinies so disaster-es, that you didn't think it possible.
If you stay beyond your first impression. And you have had a chance of getting used to the strange different ways things are done, India has a lot to offer. What you see at the surface and what's underneath is never the same. There will allways be something to explore and understand in India.

The indians are very friendly people(especially south indian). They are brought up to have strong awareness and trust in them selves. Generally they are warm and open minded to strangers and hospitality you'll find all over India.

My first travel advice is "Don't forget the south". Many people only go to north, but the south is in many ways much more relaxed and it's far better to start here. Don't make Calcutta your first place in India, it's just to much to start with. If possible go to the countryside, here you'll find the true India.
Language is generally not a problem. Maybe you'll need a little time to adopt to" the indian english", but that's all.

India is so unforgettable and so much worth another visit !
