GOLD: MARATHON
In 1960, the unknown Ethiopian, Abebe Bikila, became an overnight international celebrity when he won gold in the men’s marathon, becoming the first black African to win an Olympic medal. Not only did Bikila finish the 26-mile, 385-yard event in the world’s best time but amazingly he ran the entire race in his bare feet.
