Igelkottvänlig trädgård(Some of this text will follow below in English)

• TÄNK PÅ ATT IGELKOTTEN ÄR ETT FRIDLYST DJUR!!! FÅR EJ FLYTTAS, HÄNGNAS, FÅNGAS OSV. MEN DET ÄR INTE FÖRBJUDET ENLIGT LAG ATT HJÄLPA IGELKOTTEN ELLER ANDRA DJUR

• Rent och friskt vatten i lågt och stadigt fat som fåglarna inte badar i
• Lövkompost som ger många daggmaskar
• Övervintringsmöjlighet i torra och varma utrymmen fyllda med löv och halm, tex under altangolv eller låg trappa. Man kan även tillverka en åretruntbostad (för beställning av skiss, se telnr. nedan) Åretruntbostäderna uppskattas mycket även under sommaren, särskilt under kalla och regniga perioder
• Ge gärna katt- eller hundmat som kosttillskott. Även allsidig husmanskost är bra. Maten är särskilt viktig vid torra eller kalla perioder
• Ta bort krossat glas och vassa föremål. Se upp med trasiga drivbänks-och växthusglas.
• Lämna aldrig mjuka nät på marken, tex bärnät. Använd istället stela nät (kycklingnät) på ram
• Se till att igelkotten inte kan ramla ner i dammar, pooler, brunnar och hål. Om det finns risk att igelkotten faller i, ordna så att den kan ta sig upp med hjälp av trampstenar, flytbryggor, liten trappa eller stege, om den inte enkelt kan ta sig uppför kanterna
• Titta noga vad du klipper med din häcksax, grästrimmer, buskröjare och gräsklippare
• Tänk på att igelkottar håller till i ris- och lövhögar. Kontrollera därför alltid att ingen igelkott ligger i högen när du eldar upp trädgårdsskräpet eller tänder Valborgsmässoelden! Plocka om hela högen om du är osäker, innan du tänder på
• Inga miljögifter i trädgården

Caring for Wild Hedgehogs

• One of the past traditions throughout much of hedgehog loving Europe always used to be putting out a dish of milk or cream for hedgehogs. Unfortunately, this is not particularly good for our prickley little friends, in spite of the fact that they love the taste. Milk or cream can cause all sorts of stomach cramps and takes the place of food, without providing quite the same nutrition.

• Rather than milk, try putting out some dry catfood. Hedgehogs, being insectivores, are essentially carnivorous by nature (although I'm sure most people would not equate a fat grub with a steak dinner), and while not perfect, cat, or dog foods are a much better diet for hedgehogs than milk.

• Be careful in the fall when burning piles of leaves, or when turning over mulch piles. Hedgehogs love to burrow into these to hibernate, and without care, disaster can strike in the form of a burned, or impaled hedgehog.

• If you have a pool and live where hedgehogs come to visit, you might want to dangle a piece of thick rope or add a wooden ramp into your pool, in case a prickley traveller comes charging along chasing a tastey morsel, and ends up in your pool. Hedgehogs can swim just fine, but without some way of actually climbing out that they can find, around the edge of the pool, they will eventually tire and drown.

FDR/NSMPD arbetar också för att djur skall skonas från lidande i alla andra sammanhang där de utnyttjas av människan. Pälsdjursfarmerna måste bort, djurfabrikerna likaså.

FDR/NSMPD:s strategi är att verka inom alla de områden i samhället där vår påverkan kan förändra djurförsöksverksamheten och andra former av förtryck av djur.

När föreningen bildades 1882 omfattade den även Norge och Danmark och samarbetade med Finland i seklets början. Idag är FDR/NSMPD en svensk organisation med ca. 53000 medlemmar.

The Swedish Society Against Painful Experiments on Animals is the largest animal rights organization in Scandinavia,numbering over 53000 members. It was founded in 1882.

The society covers several animal Welfare issues in its work. The most important is the animal experimentation issue. The society's standpoint is that animals must not be made to suffer in experiments. The society has been a decisive factor in obtaining better protection for experimental animals by law in Sweden. From 1978 the purpose of legislation on animal experimention is that animal experiments must be reduced, since experiments on animals is an ethical problem. To this end, the National Board for L aboratory Animals (CFN) was instituted in 1979. The society has one representative on the CFN.

Sweden was the first country in the world to fund research on alternatives to animal experiments with earmarked money from the Goverment.

Since 1979 ethical review committees for animal experiments review all planned animal experiments before they can start up. Representatives from the society serve on all the seven regional committees. The society also has a delegate on the Animal Welfare Council at the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

Campaigns initiated by the society has also led to decisions in Parliament to put a label on animal tested cosmetics, a possible future ban on cosmetic tests on animals and replacement of LD50 test with other methods.

Other issues the society covers are farm animals and fur animals. The society's campaigns for a better animal protection legislation has resulted in the 1988 Animal Protection Act, which states that farm animals as well as fur animals should be kept in conditions where they can display their natural behavior.

The Animal Protection Act outlaws battery cages for hens from 1999. The society hopes for a future ban on fur farms as a result of the new Animal Protection Act.

The society is also involved in international campaigns. e.g. against seal hunts and bullfights.

Members of the board are elected at annual meetings by representatives for the local branches. There are 70 locals branches throughout Sweden, over 100 contacts and 42 youth groups.
