The Marrying Man

By: Ruthie The Brainiac

This movie was made in 1991, but I just saw it & I have got to say, that is a great movie. It's romantic, dramatic & comedic. It's something for everyone but the people who love suspense.

It's 1956. The narrator Phil (by Paul Reiser) is at a San Franscisco club. He tells the story of the singer, Vicki Anderson (Kim Basinger) & her love story with one of his friends.

In 1948, Charley Pearl (the great Alec Baldwin), the son of a toothpaste company president, proposes to Adele Horner (Elisabeth Shue) the daughter of a famous studio director. For a bachelor party, Phil & the rest of his buddies (Fisher Stevens, Peter Dobson & Steve Hytner) take a trip to Las Vegas to a club. For Charley, it's love at first sight when he sees Vicki. He tries to see her at the club, but because she's Mob boss Bugsy Siegel (Armand Assante)'s girl, she plans to sneak Charley into her house. (Sex scene one, very mild.)

When Bugsy & his 'boys' see them, his punishment instead of killing them, he forces them to get married. When Adele & her father find out, they freak out. They give Charley another shot after he divorces hen they come to see a friend's act at a club, the opening act is, you guessed it, Vicki.

He tries to talk to her, but it ends up being you know what. (Shield your eyes for this one, folks.) Dumping Adele for the second time, he marries Vicki on purpose. After they get married, Charley's father dies & Charley is the president of the company. They spend two years in Boston, where Vicki is incredibly unhappy. She ends up divorcing him for the second time & she moves back to California.

A while later, they go to Las Vegas for a friend's bachelor party & guess who's there?

There's more to the ending, but if I give it away, you won't be able to devour this scrumptious movie. (For the ladies, if you like hot guys with bright baby blues, watch this. Alec Baldwin is soooooo handsone in this flick, regardless of what he looks like now.)

A couple of setbacks in the movie:

  • The movie may seem a little boring at the beginning, but you must watch at least the first 20 minutes to really get interested.
  • If you have a weak stomach when you see a sex scene, then leave or fast forward through the two small scenes.
  • There is some adequate swearing, a couple scenes where people get beaten up & shot (in which they had humor into them), but other than that, you should like it.

This is the only romance type movie I like. It's very touching at parts. I highly recommend watching when you're home alone on a lonely night. You'll be laughing, crying & when you're done, say 'Wow', then watch it again. Rent it today!!!
