NOSE ARMAMENT FIELD MODIFICATIONS

The B-17F suffered from a lack of firepower forward. Initially only mounting a single thirty caliber machinegun.

Field modifications were often tried. Initially replacing the thirty with a fifty caliber machinegun.

Twin fifty's were also tried, but the nose was very cramped and the field of fire often restricted.

Some Fortresses had up to four fifty calibers in the nose with two cheek guns and a twin nose mount
