Its July 19th 0800 hours time for Moscow Molly with news and music from home...
Background music playing “I’m leaving on the jet plane
don’t know when I’ll be back again” This is Moscow Molly bringing NATO
Troops all the news your superiors don’t want you hear. USN Task Force 76 was
driven from the Baltic today. The amphibious warfare ships Nashville and
Belleau Wood were sunk by elements of the Red Banner Fleet and Soviet
Naval Aviation. The heavy cruiser Salem was beached to prevent her from
going under and captured. I’m sorry Marines but you don’t have a ride home
anymore. Several more populer tunes are played and she finishes with: Why
can’t we be friends”
Its Eight Thirty Good Morning Boys this is Warsaw Wilma
“I hope you’re enjoying those MRE’s for breakfast. Enlightened Americans can enjoy good home cooked meals here in Warsaw from the friendly civilians who have taken care of them.” Several testimonials from troops claiming to be Americans who surrendered and have been well treated. “The Polish 10th Tank Division with some help from Soviet Forces in the area overran and wiped out the US 5th Mechanized Infantry Division. The US XI Corps is in full retreat and the German Third Army has failed to support them. Americans why fight Germany’s battles for her? Surrender now and you’ll be well treated....” Popular music tunes for half an hour. “See just like I promised commercial free. If you do change sides come and see me about making a broadcast... I’ll make it interesting”
Armed Forces Europe Radio
“NATO forces fought a major naval engagement in the Baltic with heavy losses on both sides. The US Fifth Division continues to spearhead our drive into Poland and will soon link up with the Second Marine Division which is driving inland from the Baltic Coast. This will complete the encirclement of nearly eight Warsaw Pact Divisions. Task Force 34 will soon arrive. Meanwhile the situation on the Central Front is so stable elements of BAOR are being rotated home on leave.” Finishes with the American National Anthem.
Sergeant Schwartzenkempf and Corporal Szymas moved to their next position and were almost in cover when Ensign Wilkins took a snapshot that came to close for comfort. As they settled in they saw the convoy spread out below them and realized they were facing some serious hardware. Then the former prisoner sprinted from the jeep to the Hummer; both Marines held their fire as he appeared to be wearing US Army Style BDU’s. It was an old fashion stand-off. The convoy didn’t relish digging a sniper out of his hole and the Marines didn’t feel their odds were that good against that much firepower. Ensign Wilkens figured what the hell you can’t make an omlet with out breaking some eggs and called out the CHALLENGE for the day Buffy...It was hard to say who was more surprised when the surprised REPLY Summers came back...After they had given and received the password and countersign, Capt. O'Grady radioed the rest of the convoy, "Hold your fire, everyone. Ensign Wilkins, make contact with whoever capped the Poles.
“Don’t shoot! I’m coming out slowly! Hold on!” Schwartz slowly signals to Corporal Szymas to remain hidden and keep watch. Szymas slowly prepared his M203 with an HE round and got ready to light up the Hummer if they pulled any funny business After a slight pause, a man in full cammo and a hooded ghille suit stood slowly, a scoped rifle in his hands with the barrel pointed up over his left shoulder and his finger off the trigger. He says, “I’m Sergeant Schwartzenkemp, USMC, 2nd Marine Regiment 2nd Division. May I speak to your commanding officer?”A rather large man well over six foot, with short cropped blond hair and several days worth of beard. He appeared to be in his mid-thities and had the look of a career soldier. His gear was worn but appeared well maintained. “I am not a threat and I do not want a fight.”
Ensign Wilkens had switched from his own sniper rifle, a PSG 1, to the more handy G11, which he had at the ready but not pointed directly at the Marine. The HMMWV’s autocannon was slowly sweeping back and forth and Sergeant Snowden had a light grip on the truck mounted fifty. Ensign Wilkens called, “you guys work in pairs and I’m pretty sure I saw two of you.” Szymas had remain concealed targeting the Hummer with his 203, one HE round, one mag, pop smoke, haul butt that was the drill. The Marine Sergeant nodded and another sniper stepped out of nowhere. He identified himself as Corporal Szymas. He was 5’10 give or take an inch with gray hair, and looked like a smaller version of the Incredible Hulk. The two Marines came forward and the Sergeant offered his large and calloused hand. They exchanged a firm friendly handshake and gave each other a capsule review of what they had recently seen. The Marines had been on the run for the past 72 hours and had been set up here for almost a day.
Captain o’Grady stepped out of the UAZ-469, grabbed his M16, and started moving to the front of the convoy. I'm going to go find out who their prisoner is." As he walked past the 5 ton, he told Sgt. Snowden, "Keep your eyes and the .50 cal on our front, but don't fire unless we're fired upon." When he approached the Hummer, he kept the M16 cradled in his arms at the ready. "I'm Capt. O'Grady, commander of this unit. Who are you, and how did you end up here? " He spoke to the soldier who had just escaped from the two dead Poles. The trooper had black hair, brown eyes, early 40's, nasty head wound, Staff Sergeant rank insignia, 5th Division patch left and 2nd Armored Division right shoulder. “Sergeant Witherspoon 3rd/77th Armored sir. My Devers got wacked at Kalisz, my crew and I headed for the Rally Point and found it crawling with Ivans. We thought we were clear when we ran into a patrol from the Polish 10th Tank. One of my guys got wacked and one got away. Me I got stunned by grenade and woke enroute back to Kalisz. Apparently all new POW's are being interrogated there...
Capt. O'Grady surveyed the scene, and took stock at what he saw. Everyone was moving like zombies, but at least they were all still moving. There are a lot of guys back at the rally point that aren't, he thought, we should count our blessings. But it was increasingly obvious that the men were being pushed to their physical limits. When they had been running from the Russian advance (could it have been only 12 hours ago, it seems like a lifetime) rest wasn't an issue. But adrenaline doesn't last forever, and it takes it's toll on the body. He wanted to put more mileage between them and the Russians, but not at the expense of the men. The never talked about having to make these kind of decisions at OCS, O'Grady thought, there are times I wish I was a private, just do what I was told, and let somebody else worry about this stuff. He looked around, Well, we've got decent cover in these trees, and we've put a good 10 klicks between us and the Russians. It'll take some time for them to regroup after the attack, hopefully that will give us some breathing room. Assuming an enemy patrol doesn't stumble across us, we should be all right here for a while. He made his decision, and walked to the middle of the perimeter. "Men, and you too, Ms. Caswell, gather round. We'll rest here tonight, and start fresh tomorrow. Sgt. Gondorenko an myself will start foraging for the still, and it will give us a chance to scout out the local area. Ensign Wilkins will be in comand while we're gone. Sgt. Witherspoon, when you are up to it, I'd like you to man the 25mm when we move out. “Lima Charlies, sir, nice to have some fire power again. even if it is tissue paper wrapped” Sgt. Gondorenko will ride with me on the UAZ, and Sgt. Schwartzenkempf and Cpl. Szymas will ride on the 5 ton. Sgt. Snowden, keep me apprised of Sgt. Witherspoon's condition, and let me know when he will be up to the task. Also, get the still fired up. We have some material already to get it going. Cpl. Carmine, your first priority is to drain any fuel and oil from that Polish jeep, and check it for any usable parts. Sgt. Schwartzenkempf, you and Cpl. Szymas get some sleep now, you're bothdead on your feet." He knelt down, picked up a stick, and started drawing in the
dirt, "This is how I'd like to set up our perimeter."

"I'd like to keep about 50m between the vehicles, a fairly tight group. We'll set up a guard duty roster, with everyone taking a two hour shift. This should give us all a chance to get 8 hours sleep each, assuming we don't have any surprises during the night. Anyone who doesn't have NVG's, let me know, enough of us do that we can pass them from guard to guard. I want to keep a cold camp, no open fires, they are too easily spotted, the only exception being what we need for the still's operation. Ensign Wilkins, I'll let you determine where you want to tether your horse and let him graze, I'm a city boy from Chicago, horses are not my area of expertise. Tomorrow, we'll send out a patrol to check out the farmhouse and the route to it. Ensign Wilkins, I'd like you to take charge of that, along with our new sniper team. If the coast is clear, the rest of us will bring up the vehicles and rendezvous with you. I want you to avoid contact at all costs, information is more important than a body count. If you are forced to make a choice between eyeballing the farmhouse and being spotted, come back to the camp and we'll come up with another plan. Sgt Snowden, I'm willing to bet that you have the most medical training of all of us. I'm making you our Chief Medic, in addition to your other duties. I have a Doctors Med Kit and a set of Surgical Instruments that I'm putting at your disposal, to use as you see fit. See what you can do for SSgt Witherspoon. Cpl Carmine, I'd like you to take a look at that M151, and determine what parts we can salvage from it. I don't want to stay here out in the open, however. If it can move under it's own power, we'll drive it off the road, if not, tow it with the 5 ton. {OOC Preliminary examination shows Wear Value 10 with three breakdowns running on Methanol about two thirds of a tank, will have to be towed “Also this will give us a chance to top off our fuel tanks.} “Everybody else, pull our vehicles off somewhere where we won't be spotted from the road and set up a defensive perimeter, with the Humvee facing the road. That will give us some time to get organized, coordinate with the new additions to the team, and plan our next move. I'd like to detatch the Water Buffalo from the Humvee and attach it to the 5 ton. We might need some firepower in a hurry, and the 5 ton has a better towing capacity. We'll salvage any equipment and weapons that the Poles had on them. I'd also like to strip the bodies and save their uniforms, they might prove useful.{OOC Two uniforms medium size, Tokarov Pistols with no reloads one Ak74 with three mags. Memo in Polish: From Cmdr 6th ABN to Cmdr 10th Tank, Desantniki haven't found it, TOO BAD, believed to be in the possession of NATO Spec Ops. This has priority over previous mission.} Ensign Wilkins, since you've been taking point, I have a 25x Image Intensifier I'm putting at your disposal. Hopefully, it will give you an edge at spotting the enemy before they spot us. Sgt Schwatzenkempf and Cpl Szymas, how long have you been watching this road, and what can you tell us about the traffic on it? Specifically, numbers and type of personnel and equipment, main direction of travel, etc. ‘Twenty four hours, no vehicles just a few NATO Support Types and Warsaw Pact Stragglers.’ “SSgt Witherspoon, is there any other information you can give us? ‘Couple of fancy Russians at the Rally Point sir, Guards Airborne and a Russkie Air Force officer who really looked out of place.’ He relates story at start of turn three. “Also, what is your MOS and skills? Cav Scout, Vehicle TC Sir if its on a Brady/Devers I can operate it. Also speak a little Russkie, not fluent but enough to get by sir.’ {OOC Approx TVD 50 LCG 50 Recon 50 Russian 40 from the way he carries himself you get the impression he knows what he's talking about} "Ms. Caswell, I'm sorry about Major Owens. But I'm curious about what you're doing out here. I didn't think there was a CNN left to report for, not to mention anybody still having televisions to watch it on" ‘Don't really know for sure, no contact in two years, but I've got one hell of an archive for whoever is left.’

That's all I have Does anyone have anything for me? No Dismissed”
From 0800 to 1200, Cpt. O'Grady and Sgt. Gondorenko will forage for
the still, with Sgt. Gondorenko bringing along his hunting bow in case
they spot game. {Pork tonight took down a medium size wild boar They will be scouting out the area immediately surrounding the camp, no further than 300m while foraging, to see if there is any signs of enemy activity or local inhabitants. {possibily a few individual foragers} They will keep in radio contact with the rest of the group, should anything happen. From 1200 to 1600, Cpt. O'Grady will rest, at Sgt. Gondorenko'sinsistance. The Sgt will prepare the material they have foraged for the
still. If he has shot any game he will dress it out for dinner. If he finishes before 1600, he will be on security.{preparing material and dressing the pig kept him busy}
From 1600 to 2000, Sgt Gondorenko will rest, and Cpt. O'Grady will
coordinate with the other team members about the guard duty roster, check perimeter security, check on Sgt. Witherspoon's condition, check on the vehice status with Cpl. Camine, and check about the status of the still with Sgt. Snowden. Also, while he is doing this, he will try to talk to other team members as much as possible one on one, to get to know them, and show them he is a capable leader.
We'd been hightailing it away from the bad guys for some time now. I hadn't seen an old 'jeep' in basic or the first few years into this war, but as HUMMERs got shot up more and more had come out of mothballs and had appeared in the front lines. There was a trooper hurt bad by a blow to the head by some Polish captors that an unseen sniper team offed. After some quick debate and a quick first aid of the wounded trooper "You'll live, good thing your skull is thicker that the steel on that pistol" We dragged the jeep off the road. I was in the 5 tonner as we dragged the jeep and yelled to the guys behind to "give a shot at obscuring those tracks" I know it was kind of futile but may be the tracks would be missed by the casual observer. We moved a ways off the road and the Captain gave some quick orders to disperse the vehicles. {Use my RCN 50 to help recommend best concealment positions for the vehicals.} I had suggested further off the road than the Captain has decided. I would like to get into the trees FF6 at least...If hill EE6 is large enough, suggest to the Captain that concealment behind that would obscure us from the road. Suggest posment of sentry atop hill EE6 should have good view of the road and into our camp, to the Captain. Vehical camo will be mission number one, help get nets over vehicals, branches scrub etc.. If Witherspoon is stable will do preliminary set up on still, if not Whitherspoon gets priority. “nothing a canteen size aspirin wouldn’t cure Top. Give the AK that we captured a go over and give it to Witherspoon "Here's your Soviet Issue Kalishnikov hope it serves you well" He gives it a quick function check and safeties it. I'm assuming we all haven't eaten in awhile, when men are basically set I want to do a wander around and do 'sergeants duties' If anyone looks particularly fatigued give them a "Rough time eh' troop? Everyone looks dog tires with Level Two Fatigue You did good and every things all right now, You may not feel like eating but I want you to get a ration in you and when the Captain tells you get some shut eye." To the two snipers do a formal introduction "Name's Snowden welcome to O'Grady's Irregulars, you guys get some rest we’ll watch out for you. "As soon as my turn to sleep comes around, I'm planning a nap under the 5 tonner, HK CAW at my side. If there is a time when I have a little 'extra time' I'd like to work on a little easy access station at my gunners position on the 5 tonner. I can't fend off an attacker who would happen to get too close to the 5 tonner that M2 mount would have a 'blind spot' near the truck and would want my weapons available in a hurry. {Not much to work with and you really needed the sleep.}
Whenever my sleep period is over I'll again make a round of the troops. Check on Whitherspoon "how's that melon?" Better Top, he been looking over the fire control of the Chain Gun Hummer. Caswell seems strong enough but make sure she's okay. ‘Nothing a hot bath and a real bed wouldn’t cure Mr. Snow.’ Approach the Captain and begin to formalize plans for our recon of the approach to town. I'd rather stay here and just send a small team in to recon and contact the priest, before we decide to move toward Ostrow.
Put some more work into the still trying to have all fires done by dusk. Sgt Schwartz said,: "Snowden! Can you use some help with that still? I had a few bio and chem classes in college. We used to make our own hooch in lab, at least until the prof. caught us! I was pre-med at U of M, but I joined the Marines just after I graduated. Talk about a couple of pissed off folks! [becomes serious] Good thing they didn't live long enough to see this s@%$#^.”
Sgt Snowden replied, U of M? As in Michigan? I went to Minnesota got a lot of schooling in there. I know a little about a lot. Never really fit into place stayed with pre-med and really liked chemistry, actually knowing how things work and all. We used to have a pretty elaborate home brewing set up when I was a teenager, parents kind of looked the other way because we were being 'creative' My brother Aaron and.....(gets silent looks at the ground)...well anyway I got some experience with alcohol production. Get some shut eye I got some things to look over, like Whitherspoon's dented melon. I'd like to formally welcome you to O'Grady's Irregulars. I've only known these guys for a couple of days, but they're all good men...even Caswell has her s--together.
Schwartzenkempf: "Yeh, University of Michigan. Go Blue! and all that. It was my parent's idea that I should be in med school, but I've always liked guns and the outdoors better. Szymas is a Michigan boy, too. A real live Yooper! I met him when I was an instructor back in the states. #@%$& funny we should be teamed up for the Baltic offensive. Would you believe he's only 26? He's sure proof that war ages a man, @#&%. You get the still fired and I'll help you with the second distillation when I get back from the snoop and poop. And don't worry, I don't drink when I'm on duty and I'm always on
duty."
A First Sergeant’s job is never done... borrow NVGs for my night watch and again sleep under the 5 tonner. If night passes uneventful will basically repeat above activities, make sure everyone, including me, eats something, continue to look for ways to improve
our camoflage / defense. If anyone is lax on weapon cleaning or general maintenance get after them. {GM OOC check everyone’s write up and see if they did weapons maintenance if its not written it didn’t happen} I'm assuming most of our crew, snipers SEAL will be pretty good with their rifles. I will take a look at Caswell's PPK make sure its clean and working. She clears her PPK and ejects the mag (one was up the pipe with the mag topped off) hands you her weapon for inspection, immaculate, cleaned, lightly oiled. " That's a beauty of a little pistol you got there, looks like you take good care of it too" She replies, “it was a gift from one of dad’s Brit friends, (daydreams for a minute), and its save my butt a couple of times.” Do a little friendly chatting with the new members just to gain their acceptance.
CPL Carmine will check the UAZ over once again. He might be crazy, but he's somewhat suspicious of the vehicle. He finds a thermite grenade under the fuel tank with a reel of fish line attached to the pin and hooked to the rear axle. One or two more klicks of driving and Boom. It seems a working vehicle with that much diesel would be too valuable to trust to 2 klutzy Poles. Hey, they might not be Poles -- there were Spetsnatz in the area, right? Could have some James Bond-type tracking device on the thing. No homing device but a small map case with a paper written in what he’s pretty sure is Latin-former alter boy. So he'll give the thing another once-over, not sure what he's looking for -- maybe just anything out of place, or that he might have missed before. It's probably just stress and lack of sleep eating away at the paranoia center of Johnny's brain. So he'll stretch out good, run in place, do some cals, take care of nature, eat an MRE, ask about sleep and who pulls watch & when, and see what the CPT wants done, and when he wants it done. One of the benefits(probably the only one) of having an officer around is your life is somewhat structured, whether you like it or not...{OOC Carmine needs to sleep. Driving is hard work, and he was doing alot before the group even set out on this little picnic. The others had been too, so he'll take his turn at watch. He pulls his (considerable) weight, and wants to be fair with his team mates. Two periods of sleep would be beautiful, and should leave him ready to fix vehicles, drive like a madman, and kill Commies at will... so that's 1 or 2 periods, CPT's choice .Carmine will begin a maintenance log for all vehicles and share it with the CPT. Maintenance numbers are in hours per week, so he'll divide his time, giving attention to whatever is needed. If it has been taken care of for the week-all vehicle need weekly maintenance. Carmine will aid in foraging/scrounging. Either way, that'll be 1 period.
If during the forage/scrounge trip he finds a decent piece of wood -- hickory would be best, maple or oak acceptable --to begin working into several blank staves for bows, he'll carry that back to the hide site, along with suitable materials for arrow shafts. All will be cleaned up, and bound together, and readied for making bows when time and
situation permits. Would Carmine know anything about "cocktailing" diesel fuel and alcohol, like they do with some race car fuels. {GM WVD 50 maybe MEC 80 good chance-bottom line has the knowledge but its a little rusty} I don't personally, but it might be a way to get a little more power out of the alcohol without fully converting the engine
over. As it is, the UAZ might not be the best thing to be using the diesel with. He'll consider it all, and report the results to CPT O'Grady.
{BIC}
The danger apparently was over. There were snipers up ahead, but they were ours. Good thing. They'd be good to have in the group for scouting and covering our approaches to where ever the CPT was leading us. He said something about a priest, well, Carmine hadn't been real regular at Mass since he was 10 years old back in Philly. He looked ridiculous anyway -- a hulking linebacker-ish adolescent in an alter boy's robe. It was hard for him to think holy thoughts at that age, anyway... But if the Priest had something for us, or could get us out of this mess fine. We'd go. And act polite and sincerely religious. There were just more questions than answers in this awful existence of life after 5th Division had died. Carmine smiled grimly, trying to lighten the mood somewhat. "CPT, everyone in the group is tired. “When you come up with the watches, please be kind to your Chief of Mechanical Services, and let me get some shut eye. Our Transportation Department will be requiring my services later, and our Chemical Department may have need of me for the gathering of corn husks and waste vegetable products. And in the event of unwelcome visitors, my date for the Prom will be Sweetheart, here", he said patting the M60E3 which was always within arms reach of the big man.” Carmine did his best Joe Peschi imitation though his little speech, it might have been funny, but was probably just annoying. Carmine was way bigger than the actor, and it all lost something in the translation. Perhaps the imitation would have been better if Carmine wasn't wolfing down part of another MRE while he did it. He ate fast, but was suprisingly neat, despite talking and gesturing while he delivered his impersonation. As for the discussion of moving up toward the farmhouse, Carmine listens attentively, and holds his opinion for last. "Yeah, it's like, we open up with that 25mm, and everyone within miles comes and checks us out. A few sniper's shots, and a burst or two from MGs, and no one cares, there's been enough of that going on lately. 'Course if things go to hell, the 25 should end it real quick. I just think us being quiet is a big part of us being *alive*. And as much as I hate to say it, once any of the vehicles becomes a hindrance, I say we strip it, and move on. That diesel in the UAZ has got me thinking... I'm gonna check that thing out some more. If those Poles were stragglers, they really lucked
out in finding ANY wheels, let along some running on diesel." Returns hey guys how about a map case with latin paperwork and a thermite grenade boobytrap”
Several Hours later...
The Marine Sgt and Ms Caswell had wandered off, some guys have all the luck thought the Armored Cav SSG who had noticed them leave. Suddenly the big jarhead landed in some brush with a bone jarring thud. "In your dreams Marine" was heard all over camp, a few eyebrows were raised when a 5'3" reporter dropped a 6'3" Marine.
Since when did CNN teach that thought Witherspoon. Sgt Schwartenkemp: "Hey! Don't send me mixed signals, b*&^%$#! Now get off and we'll forget this even happened!"
Sgt Schwartenkempf: "Sorry for the trouble Cpt. You know, [shrugs] women!
Won't happen again ,sir!. I’ll get myself cleaned up and rested. My Cpl. will coordinate gear with Wilkins before we head out. Geez, this is the first time I’ve felt even a little bit safe since we landed on the beach. Good Night!
Corporal Szymas, “Ensign W-Wilkins, sir, we’ll need to coordinate our s-stuf-f b-before we go on our little hike. See you after I g-get s-some shut-t eye."{The snipers move off together.} They each rummage in there packs and produce a bar of soap, a straight razor and a mirror. With the canteen cup as a sink, the men wash and shave. Schwartz moves to talk with Snowden in private then finds himself a comfortable spot at the base of a tree. Before long, his breathing is slow and regular and there might be a hint of a smile on his face. Must be dreaming of stateside. Szymas pulls a well-worn book from his pack and thumbs it open. He reads briefly, turns to another part then closes his eyes. Is he praying? Maybe, but soon he’s asleep, too. Szymas woke with a jolt and looked around like he didn’t know where he was. Reality hit within seconds and his face frowned. He stood and removed his shirt, revealing powerful shoulders covered in thick, dark hair then dropped and began push-ups. Schwartz came over and dropped beside his Cpl. “Come on pussy! Let’s see you do some real pt!” and began doing push-ups rapidly. “G-god is going to s-strike you d-dumb someday because of your language, B-b-blackie!”, replied Szymas Grinning, Szymas picked up the pace. After completing a set of 100, he rolled onto his back and ground through a set of 100 sit-ups. Schwartz kept up until Szymas flipped back onto his stomach and powered himself through another 100 push-ups. Half way through, Schwartz gave out a hearty laugh, stood and placed a friendly boot on Szymas’ back for the last 10 push-ups. Szymas didn’t slow much and flipped over to complete his pt with another 100 stomach churning sit-ups. Schwartenkempf simply shook his head and walked away to find Wilkins and Cpt O’Grady saying, “And he calls this just working the kinks out, @#^ ! Szymas stood, brushed off the leaves and grass, then put his shirt back on before getting down to the business of prepping the equipment for yet another mission.
The camp settled down to operating the still with a carefully shielded fire. Everyone also worked getting badly needed shut eye, a bite to eat, as well as vehicle and weapon maintenance. Fortunately as everyone took their turn at guard, even Caswell insisted on pulling a shift, no one had anything to report.
