Twilight 2000 Practice Exercise

For this exercise use the illustration on the Twilight 2000 First Edition Boxxed Set as what you see through your rifle scope. You are a Spetsnatz Sniper assigned to harrass NATO Troops in this area. Report to your Team Leader who is over a kilometer away and then pick your first target. Write up your response as if you were sending in a game turn.

The following players completed the practice exercise and will receive bonus experience points at the one month (real time) E.P. Evaluation

The sniper slid his Dragunov rifle forward, snugging it to his shoulder. He slowly scanned near the crossroads, then swung it back as he saw the group stopped near the road sign. He observed them for a minute, then keyed his throat mike.

"Hawk Leader this is Rifle Two......targets acquired near crossroads. One humvee stopped near the Krakow roadsign. I also have five hostiles in American military issue with weapons of same source. I identify three male and two female. Four of the five have left the vehicle, foraging for fuel from the materials carried. No rank insignia visible from my vantage point. I also identify weapons: Two M-16 assault rifles and one M-60 squad machinegun with the dismounted element. The remaining humvee crewperson is manning the Mark 19 40mm belt fed grenade launcher. I am taking them under fire as per engagement orders......over."

The sniper clicked his mike off and breathed deeply a few times, settling the scope on the center chest of the female manning the grenade launcher. He knew that with her out he could engage the remaining group at will, focusing on the M-60 gunner next. He breathed out again......then held a half breath and squeezed the light trigger.....

########################################################################"Delta 6, this is Delta 1, Over. I have spotted 1 enemy vehicle and 5

soldiers. Enemy appears to be on recon, possibly looking for fuel

(soldier in foreground is holding a gas can). Location is on the road at

guidpost sign 20km outside of Krakow. Unable to make out Unit

designations. Equipment is 1 Humvee w/Mark-19 Grenade Launcher mounted,

1 M60 machinegun, and 2 M16's. All are wearing BDU's, 3 with helmets. I

am targetting soldier in vehicle manning the Mark 19. Awaiting further

orders. Out." (I chose the female soldier in the Humvee because; A. She

is the only one in actual physical control of the vehicle, B. She is

manning the most destructive weapon, and C. She is wearing a tankers

helmet w/ radio attatched, and may be in contact with other soldiers.)

########################################################################   Grusha eleven had been watching the american unit for almost a minute now

through his scope, it was time to report in he figured, his hand slowly moved

to the mic switch.  Not that anyone could see him camouflaged at 400m, but he

didn't take any risks by moving fast.  His eye still on the scope, he licked

his lips.  His legs were a bit stiff from this position, but he'd be moving

soon, very soon actually.

"...Grusha One, this is Grusha Eleven. Over." ever so softly, but clearly,

spoken into the microphone.  He waited for a reply.

"...Grusha One, this is Grusha Eleven. Over."

"Go ahead, Eleven." was the abrupt reply from his officer.

"Contact.  Five armed soldiers, one soft-skinned vehicle.  Group leaving

their vehicle, possibly in search of fuel.  Current location is 20 km northwest

from Krakow, off of highway 4.  American infantry soldiers most likely, no unit

markings visible, possible officer present, possible civilian present.  It is 1

o'clock.  HumVee truck, varied cargo, armed with Mk19 auto-grenade launcher

with ammo, crew member remaining with tanker style helmet, no antennaes seen.

One possible officer or NCO in group, with map case and M16 rifle with special

issue ammo drum, also kevlar helmet and 10 litre red metal gas can; possible

special forces, probably combat veteran.  One unarmed soldier, with backpack

and old style steel american helmet, probably reservist.  One M-60

machine-gunner, african, with limited ammunition.  One blonde female, uniform

too big, possible ex-civilian/ex-non-combatant with M16 rifle, much extra ammo

and smoke grenade; probably combat novice.  All in camouflage american style

uniforms, none with armoured vests, also carrying no supplies.  I am continuing

harassment mission, preparing to engage enemy; targeting area effect Mk.19

gunner first, probably officer secondary.  Over."

   "...Copy.  Carry on... out"

   "Engaging, out."

Grusha eleven let out a long breath, relaxed, and perpared to commence

firing.  He drew in another long breath, and exhaled.  Then enhaled again, and

held it.  His finger squeezed the trigger on the SVD between heart beats.

'CRACK' screamed the rifle... too late for the Mk.19 gunner to ever hear it.

#######################################################################

Yuri peered at them for perhaps the 100th time.  His face, if anyone could see

it, betrayed

nothing.  The trickle of perspiration which had formed on his forehead finally

drained

downward into his left eye.  The salty liquid stung his eye, but Yuri smiled,

almost with

pleasure.  Any ordinary person in this situation would simply have wiped the

sweat away

from his eye.  But then of course, Yuri was far from ordinary.  And any ordinary

person in

this situation would have been killed long ago...

His thoughts finally composed, he keyed the throat mike of his radio, and spoke

slowly and

clearly.    "Zookeeper, this is Tiger-4, please respond."

The answer came as slowly as usual.  The person on the other end of the

transmission was

very skilled in exuding calm, even over great distances.  "Tiger-4, this is

Zookeeper.  Go..."

"Zookeeper, I have a contact.  Five, repeat five individuals.  Four of the group

are

dismounted, apparently leaving a vehicle.  One of that group carries a gasoline

can.  From

the ease at which he carries it, I believe it is empty.  One of the five

individuals remains

with the vehicle, and is on the radio, but visible behind the vehicle's pintle

mount weapon.

There are two females, and 3 males.  One of the males is African-American."

Yuri paused for clarity.

"The group is on the road 375 meters NW of my position, beneath power lines, and

near a

sign indicating Krakow as 20 KM distant.   The group is dressed in US-style

woodland

camo, carries US weapons, is using a US Vehicle, and includes an

African-American.

Four points of identification as a US unit.  Only insignia visible is the US ARMY

tab over

the dismounted female's jacket pocket.  I currently maintain them under

observation, time

is 1704 hours, 27 SEP 2000."

Again Yuri paused, and inhaled ever so quietly.

"Caucasian male #1 carries an M16 with Beta CMag attached, in addition to the

gasoline

can.  He is heavily burdened with equipment, and looks confident.  Caucasian male

#2 is

also heavily encumbered, and appears tenative, even worried. The African-American

male

carries an M60 MG, and apparently little else.  The dismounted female, a petite

blonde,

carries an M16, ammo bandolier, and a cylindrical grenade.  Finally, the last

female is at

the weapons mount of a HUMVEE, speaking on the radio.  The weapon is a Mk19 AGL,

and a belt of ammuntion is present.  A large amount of equipment is fastened to

the back

of the vehicle.  The vehicle shows some signs of wear, a few bulletholes, faded

camo paint

scheme.  No identifying marks or insignia are visible.  Request permission to

open fire at

my discretion, over..."

[ooc]

GM:  Did Eric miss anything that Yuri would detect?

Yuri's Team Leader responded.  "I roger your report.  Go, ahead Tiger-4, light is

fading.

Make your shots, and rendezvous at Point Zeta your earliest convenience."

Message acknowledged.  Tiger-4 out."

The light was indeed fading, but the sun was to Yuri's back.  If the target

presented well, he

would shoot...  It would be the female in the vehicle.  If a safe followup shot

could be

taken, the M60 gunner would be second.

[ooc]

If there is a shot on the M60 without exposing Yuri, he will take it.  Then the

others can be

picked off at leisure...

Yuri went over the scenario in his mind.  Apparently, the others were going on /

returning

from a scrounging mission.  Those armed with rifles would pose no problems for

Yuri at

this range.  Thank Baba Yaga he had carefully selected his hide site.  The man

with the

M60 would've been his initial choice of targets, but the female at the vehicle

was truly the

more decisive target, for several reasons.  A head shot was entirely realistic

for Yuri at this

range, and that would put her out of the picture.  Plus, it ran a good chance of

ruining the

radio headset, further disrupting this group's communications, as well as that of

the

person(s) they were in contact with.  Perhaps the female, on the radio, and not

taking part

in the scrounging operation, was the commander!  Finally, the Mk19 grenade

launcher

would be a deadly weapon for Yuri to face if it were not silenced.  The M60 could

spray

the area, true, but the Mk19 would shower the surroundings with multiple HE

rounds, and

that would be very bad for Yuri.  But in the event the man with the M60 felt left

out, he

would be the second to find himself in the crosshairs of Yuri's Dragunov......

[OOC]

Do you use any special rules for snipers?   Even with high skill, the rules

embarrass even

the best snipers.  I've seen various house rules for snipers, I don't know if I

really like them

that much.  Headshots should be realistic at 350-400 meters, and chest shots out

to about

600-800m... As a rule I rarely play snipers because IMHO the rules just don't

mesh well

with reality.  Let's face it, if Yuri didn't cut the mustard, he'd be a mechanic,

not a Spetz

sniper.

########################################################################

I had been ordered out to look for an American vehical that had been

spotted moving past our position towards Krakow.  I was just moving to the

top of a small rock outcropping when I saw the vehical pulled to the side of

the road a little over 300 meters away.  I had a good shot, I was elevated

above their position and had a clear line of fire.  I laid down to get the

best steady positon and gazed through the scope of the SVD.  After a quick

appraisal of the situation I raised the arial of my radio to give a SITREP

to my commanding officer.

"Victory one to Ogre...Victory one to Ogre'" I breathed into the

mouthpiece hoping the hills behind me didn't bother the reception. "Ogre

here...go ahead victory one...have you found the vehical?" came the voice

that I recognized as Valerie Ulionov's, who was the C.O's radio operator.

"Affirmative Ogre have found vehical and assesed situation"  There was a

garbbled interaction over the earpiece, "Give me that you fool" I heard

Captain Fetisov say as he grabbed the radio away from Valerie, while holding

the com button down.  "Give your situation report soldier"

I hesitated for a second almost wanting to laugh at what I thought was

an absurd lack of military discipline on the part of Fetisov's.  "One

Hum-Vee squad carrier is stopped by the edge of road, 20 km outside of

krakow.  There are five occupants all armed with infantry weapons, one light

machine gun...vehical is mounted with Mk 19 auto grenade launcher.  There

are no insignias on any members"

Thinking to myself I noticed that the patrol had two females and one

black in it.  Knowing how a capitalistic society discriminates against

minorities and blacks I knew that none of them were the officer.  I also

assumed it wasn't the sheepish little man who struggled under the weight of

his gear.  No it was the straight standing man who began walking first away

from the vehical, he was the officer, and he would soon be dead.

"They seem to have run out of gas," I spoke again into the radio.  "Two

members are leaving on foot, one with a gas can in hand."   Ah silly

American officer, I again thought to myself, you try so hard to be friends

with your men, to be 'one' of them.  Your insistance on carrying the gas can

like a regular soldier has truley given away the fact that you are a

stereotypical American officer, straight out of the description in my party

handbook.

"Ogre...officer seems to have a case...possibly containing maps around

his neck...they are walking toward my position...approximatly 300 meters

away...I am going to wait till they are near and away from their comrades

cover fire, then attempt to take the officer out...I suggest you advance

toward my position...I will try to hit or scare off the second member of the

advancing party...and retrieve the suspected map case...if I cannot do it

quickley I do not want that grenade launcher firing on my position...if you

are advancing on my positon though, our troops will be able to supress or

neutralize it and we can then retrieve the case...Is this an agreeable plan

of action sir?"

"Ogre to Victory your assesment appears sound...am readying to move on

your position as soon as possible...will listen for your shots" came

Fetisov's reply.  "For Mother Russia" I breathed as I pulled some foliage

around me for camoflage and steadied the SVD, preparing to wait for my prey.

Igor is lying in his hide a couple of hundred

meters off the road junction about 20 km from

Krakow.  Suddenly a group of America's in a

Hummer apprear at the jucntion and stop.  All but

one, the gunner for the MK19, dismount.  Igor

ontinues to watch the party for a bit, scoping

each of the individuals, looking into thier eyes

and souls.  He slowly keys the radio set and

whispers into the mouth piece..

"Ivan, this is Igor, sitrep over"

Igor waits a few seconds for the answering

squelch to know Ivan is listening then proceeds..

"5 American troops with small arms. one M60 MG,

others appear to be M16's, maybe older versions."

He shifts slightly as he continues..

"Arrived in HumV turtleback with MK19 AGL

topside.  Gunner providing overwatch, rest are

looking around.  Maybe for fuel.  One appears to

be engineer with some demo equipment."

"They just arrived about three minutes ago from

the northwest."

"Am engaging now, Igor Out"

Igor slowly takes up aim on his first target, the

brunette behind the MK19.  He hesitates briefly

thinking what a waste of female, as he centers

the cross hairs on the bridge of her nose. He

adjusts his breathing and squeezes the trigger,

watching as a third eye appears on the beautiful

face.

He quickly searches for the black soldier with

the M60 MG.  If he takes fire from the group, he

will withdraw to another position he has

preselected about 25 meters to his right, other

wise he will take another shot from this position

to take out the black soldier.

########################################################################

After assessing the situation from his hiding place, Igor grabs his radio.

Silently, almost whispering he reports to the team leader.

"Trouble-1 to Trouble Leader ! Contact with enemy forces at sector 0251.

Approximate strength is one squad, motorized infantry. One Hummer and 5

soldiers. Automatic grenade launcher on hummer. No other heavy weapons other

than light machinegun. One is probably a combat engineer .They are moving

southeast. No tanks. I will take on the grenade launcher first."

[waiting for response]

Igor turns off his radio and crawls into firing position. He takes aim on

the soldier operating the grenade launcher, trying to hit the grenade belt.

[results]

The next target will be the machinegunner.

[results]

After the shot Igor crawls backwards deeper into the woods [assuming he is

in a wooded area]. He gets out his radio and reports again: "Trouble-1 to

Trouble Leader ! Grenade launcher down, machinegunner down. Moving to a new

firing position."

Igor slowly moves westward in order to get a new firing position.

[in case of heavy enemy activity, Igor will break off the attack and follow

the enemies in a distance, hoping for another opportunity]
