Things to do in Anchorage Alaska
Okay, obviously you're going to need something to do if
you're in a new, unfamiliar place. Unless you have a
pretty good idea of what is out there you're not going
to be able to do what you normally enjoy doing... So,
to help you get aquainted with the kind of stuff you might
be looking for we've set up this little list of places you
might be interested in.
Malls & Alternatives -- in Alaska we have a very limited amount of good stores, but check out these malls if you like to shop, or are looking for clothes.
- 5th Avenue Mall -- (the best mall in my opinion) Located downtown
- Dimond Mall -- (known for it's Old Navy) Located in Dimond
- Northway Mall -- has a few good stores, but Red Robin is right behind it...
- Subterrania -- has alternative (read: punk) clothes. Great selection of Doc Martins. On 4th Ave. by the theater.
- The Look -- also has very cool alternative clothes, and has one of the best shoe selections in town. Located by the Sears Mall off of New Seward
Movies -- Unless you are used to city movie prices tickets here are VERY expensive. We're talking almost 8$ a tick...
- Century -- the biggest, and debatably the best. Reclining seats and movable cupholders. Bonus: great, if expensive, snack bar
- Fireweed -- The best theater to go to on opening nights there is a HUGE theater. Other than that pretty normal.
- Totem -- This one is right down the street from Bartlett High, and a military discount
- There are of course other theaters... you can check them out in the Anchorage News in the section for the day, or the 8 section if it's Friday.
Misc. things to do around town...
- RESTAURANTS: -- Red Robin: (3 locations) great hamburgers, and the best Frys in town
- -- Phillips: great food, and an extremely cool place to hang out, and service is good. Bonus: open 24 hours
- -- La Mex: great Mexican food. Comparable prices. Like the best Salsa you will ever taste. It's addictive. (located downtown on 6th St., on Spenard, and on Diamond)
- --Papa Murphey's Take n' Bake: (by Blockbuster on Debarr) Delicious Pizza, that you can get fairly cheap. Bonus: freshest because you can bake it yourself...
- --Crazy Croissant: THE BEST chicken sandwiches, and infamous chocolate bread. To find it go to REI... it's right next to the building that looks like a mini skyscraper. I do not know the address. sorry...
- --Cafe Amsterdam: Right across from The Look. Great food, kind of steep prices.
- The Moose's Tooth: The best gourmet pizza in the world, definately a must try. But count on having to wait at least 15 minutes, it's always crowded.
- MOVIE RENTALS: -- Blockbuster: (of course) There are a million locations. The closest to base/Bartlett is the one on Debarr.
- --Video City: on Muldoon (near Bartlett), just outside of Elmendorf et. al. has a pretty good selection, free membership. Bonus: Occasionally they give away free posters...
