Artist Profile: Curtis Kohl

"Restlessly creative" may be the best way to describe Curtis Kohl, a self-taught artist whose activities range from traditional work in watercolor and pen and ink to cutting edge imagery on Internet magazines ("zines") and original musical compositions.

Curtis started becoming involved with art a number of years ago as an emotional retreat. "I'd have difficulty sleeping and so I'd draw," he recalls. "My images are highly personal, like the work of Salvador Dali and Marcel Duchamp."

Although Curtis started using traditional media, he has become increasingly involved with computer-aided design. In part, this is a result of difficulty he now has in holding a pen or pencil for periods of time to draw or color. "The computer allows me to do things I wouldn't be able to do otherwise," he notes. "I can now draw an image and scan it into the computer and then work on refining it. I can smooth out a line or color in an area easily - something I couldn't otherwise do because of muscle fatigue."

The computer doesn't simply serve as an artistic tool for Curtis, it also serves as a way of exhibiting his work. He has "shown" his work in a number of on-line galleries and also served as artistic director for numerous "zines." At this point, Curtis is involved with 27 websites and has gotten responses to his work from as far away as Australia and the Netherlands. Among the sites where you can see Curtis' work are Deviant Arts , SITO, and Myartinfo.

On a more terrestrial level, Curtis has shown his work in the VSA arts of Michigan exhibit, Art With a View I. This juried exhibition features artwork by five Michigan artists, and includes colored pencil, gouache, ink, and mixed media work by Curtis. "I've been involved with VSA since 1995," says Curtis. "VSA has been very responsive to me."

Besides his sketching, Curtis creates original music on the computer, using a synthesizer, tape deck, tape player and old turntable and also works on animations and videos. With all this creative energy, it's easy to see why Curtis Kohl is one of VSA arts of Michigan's featured artists.
