Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie, born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller 15 September 1890, in Torquay, Devon, England, has written more than 80-mystery novels. Her compelling characters and rare plot twist have made her works unique within the mystery field. The two characters that have become the best known among viewers and readers of all ages are:1)Hercule Poirot--The Belgian Detective, 2)Miss Marple--The English Detective.

David Suchet, the most recent actor to portray Hercule Poirot, carries the part well as he ingeniously solves each mystery. Poirot, a somewhat dower almost boring character, has captivated most Christie readers. His handlebar mustache and black bolder top off the look of an educated, and intriguing man whose demeanor would alert none to the prowess with which he is able to catch his man.

Miss Marple, portrayed by Margaret Rutherford in my favorites, is a spinster with a knack for solving even the most well thought out crimes. She rivals Sherlock Holmes and Poirot with her intellect and ability. She, of course, is reminiscent of the grandmother/motherly type dispensing love and justice with a rare sense of humor, and fair play.

Agatha Christie not only created her characters, but believed in them, as well. The proof of what she was became apparent in every novel. She was, and will remain, the Queen of Mystery.

Agatha Christie's first marriage to Col. Archibald Christie in 1914 would end in divorce in 1926. Col. Christie had fallen in love with a younger woman. Becoming depressed, the already famous mystery writer would disappear for three weeks, leading to speculation as to her fate. When found, she stated that she had memory loss. The mystery solved, would not be discussed again.

In 1930, Mrs. Christie would marry again. The man who captured her heart was Max Mallowen, an archeologist. A rare photo, which I could not find on the Internet, shows Agatha and Max at the site of King Tut's tomb.

Several films, based on Agatha Chritie novels, have graced the silver screen. Among these, Murder on the Orient Express, a truly intriguing film with a rare twist.
