Gee Gees Varsity

2000-2001

Background

The University of Ottawa badminton team competes in the Ontario Universities Athletics (OUA) league. Ottawa competed against 8 other universities, with the top six making the playoffs.

In Ontario university badminton, defeating the opposing university team means that you have won the ‘tie’. Each tie consists of 11 matches: 3 mens singles, 3 ladies singles, 2 mens doubles, 2 ladies doubles, and finally 1 mixed doubles. Obviously, the first team to win 6 matches wins the tie, and the first to win 2 games wins their match.

Coach

Dominic Soong is our badminton guru. He is a level 4 badminton coach and his playing and coaching abilities far-exceed those of most other coaches. Coach Soong competed at the world level in his prime, achieving a rank of #1 in Malaysia and #2 in the world! His coaching resume is equally as impressive, having coached the provincial teams in Quebec and Ontario. We are grateful to have such a talented coach as our leader.

Janet Hugli is our very helpful assistant. She is a level 3 badminton coach who is also a commendable badminton player. Besides bringing added badminton knowledge to our practices, Janet helps us with many of our administrative duties such as setting us up with transportation and rooms when we have an away tournament. Our year would not run as smoothly without her help.
