STATEMENT OF VETERINARY CARE
While this site is being provided for the benefit of the general public, it should not be considered a replacement for proper veterinary diagnosis and treatment for your reptile's illnesses and injuries. No amount of proper information can replace proper diagnostic testing and proper treatment. It is just as important for reptile owners as it is for dog or cat owners to find a qualified veterinarian that is experienced in diagnosing and treating reptiles. You should not settle for just any veterinarian since reptile medicine is only just now starting to be taken seriously by the veterinary community and many veterinarians are not well trained in dealing with reptile patients. The problem with taking your reptile to a small animal veterinarian is that many of them try to apply their knowledge of small animal medicine to reptiles which by their cold blooded nature can present unusual situation to a small animal veterinarian who may inadvertently do more harm than good. If you are unable to find an experienced reptile veterinarian in your area, perhaps you may take this information to a veterinarian that is willing to work together with you to provide your reptile with the care that it needs. It is your responsibility as a reptile owner to be choosy and take the time to search for a qualified reptile veterinarian. Most reptile veterinarians will charge you more to see your pet, because of the time, complications, special equipment and addition training involved in their care, but it is well worth it. Trying to treat your reptile yourself can also be very detrimental and cause many complications if not performed correctly. After all would you let your best friend give you an injection, enema, or remove a growth? Then why not give your reptile the same benefit. Just because your reptile only cost you $20.00 does not mean it is not worth treating because the treatment will cost you $100.00, after all can you put a price on a life or would you want someone to put one on yours? A good rule of thumb in determining whether or not you can truely afford to own a particular animal as a pet is to add up the total price of the animal itself, the cost of proper housing, lighting cost, heating cost, food cost for a 1 month period and the cost of an office visit at your veterinarians office. After you have added up all of these cost you should add an additional $100.00 dollars to the total for unexpected illnesses and injuries. After adding all of these cost together you will have a better idea of the true cost of your animal. This is a more realistic means of determining the cost of a particular reptile, rather than just looking at the price tag on it at the pet store. If you cannot afford all of these costs, than you cannot afford to properly care for the animal, regardless of the pet store price tag on the animal itself and should probably consider making another selection for a pet.
