HAROLD EDWIN CARRINGTON


Harold Edwin Carrington, 70, of Enterprise, died Tuesday, November 2, 1999, at is home in Enterprise.

Services will be held today, Thursday, November 4, at 2 p.m., graveside at Meadowlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Doster officiating and Searcy Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home today from 1 p.m. until service time.

Mr. Carrington was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite PARRISH Carrington, and his father, Harold V. Carrington.

Survivors include: Two daughters and one son-in-law, Dell CARRINGTON Wambles of Enterprise and Marilyn CARRINGTON Locklar and Mike Locklar of Wicksburg; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Grady and Lynn Carrington of Ozark and Hal Carrington of Enterprise; mother, Annie L. Carrington of Opelika; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce CARRINGTON Rickert and Rau Rickert of Mt. Clemens, Michigan; one brother, Charles Carrington of Opelika; 11 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.


November 16th, 1999 Edition


WILLIE JAMES DIGGS


Willie James Diggs, 83, of Enterprise, died Friday, November 12, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be Wednesday, November 17, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. June Williams, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Beulah Cemetery under the direction of Sconiers Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 306 Sanders Street in Enterprise.


RUBY CLYDE FLOWERS


Ruby Clyde Flowers, 70, of Enterprise, died Saturday, November 13, 1999 at her home in Enterprise. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are to be announced by Coleman Funeral Home.


G. J. GRUBBS, JR.


G. J. Grubbs, Jr., 77, of Graceville, Florida, died at his residence on Sunday, November 14, 1999, following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 17, from Byrd-Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Graceville, Florida, with Rev. Dennis Singletary and Rev. Ralph Jones officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in Meadowlawn Memorial Park, Enterprise, with Byrd-Williams Funeral Home of Graceville directing.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Holmes Creek Baptist Church, 335 Cope Road, Chipley, Florida, 32428.

Mr. Grubbs was born March 14, 1922 in Eufala and lived his early life in the south Alabama area. During his adult working life, he lived in numerous locations throughout the country while working in the steel fabrication industry. He resided in Fort Lauderdale, Florida approximately 30 years before moving to Enterprise, where he lived for 10 years prior to moving to Graceville two years ago. While in Enterprise, he was a member and deacon of the Park Avenue Baptist Church and since moving to Graceville, was a member of the Holmes Creek Baptist Church.

SUrvivors include his wife, Betty Grubbs of Graceville, Florida; two sons, Ronald Grubbs Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Britt Grubbs of Prescott, Arizona; one step-son, Ronald Newby of Navarre, Florida;one step-daughter, Rhonda Coxe of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Michael Grubbs, Paul Grubbs, Amy Grubbs, Britt Grubbs and Nichole Grubbs; two great grandchildren, Cheyenne Grubbs and Dylan Grubbs; two step-grandchildren, Joshua Newby and Jacob Newby; two step-sisters, Leoma Wood of Atlanta, Georgia, and Gladiese Crumpler of Enterprise; several nieces and nephews also survive.


JAMES HARDY HODGE, JR.


James Hardy Hodge, Jr., 60, Hartford (Esto Community) died Saturday afternoon, November 13, 1999, at the home of a daughter in the Bethlehem Florida community after an extended illness.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, November 16, from the Hartford City Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Moore officiating and Patterson-Sorrels Funeral Home directing.


MR. JAMES McLEAN, SR.


Mr. James McLean, Sr., 75, of Enterprise, died Saturday, November 13, 1999, at Medical Center Enterprise.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, November 16, at the Chapel of First Baptist Church, with Rev. Burney Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

Mr. McLean was preceded in death by a son, James McLean, Jr.. A leading merchant in Enterprise, Mr. McLean owned and operated McLean Jewelry for 48 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a Master Mason, 32nd Degree Shriner and a past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He served his community throughout his lifetime in various civic and professional organizations.


JACK WATSON


Jack Watson, 90, of Enterprise, died Sunday, November 14, 1999, at Medical Center Enterprise.

Services will be held today, November 16, at Searcy Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Kruse and Rev. Terry Rainwater officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Pearl Watson of Chancellor; 7 daughters; 4 sons; 3 sisters; 1 brother; 16 grandchild; and 20 great grandchildren.

MARION GRAY BOLDING


Marion Gray Bolding, 62, of Brantley, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999, in Elba General Hospial.

Visitation will be held at Hayes Funeral Home tonight, November 18, from 6-8 p.m. Services will be held at Hayes Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, November 19, at 10 a.m. with the Minister David Mount officiating. Burial will follow at Cameron Chapel Church in Brantley with Hayes Funeral Home directing.


CHARLES RAYMOND DAVIS


Charles Raymond Davis, 67, of Chestnut Grove Community, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999.

Services will be held at Mt. Olive Assemblt of God today, November 18, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Shirlie Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Assembly of God in Brundidge with Dillard Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Davis of Chestnut Grove Community; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Buddy Carter of Victoria Community; two sons, Tim Davis of Tampa, FLorida and Phillip Davis of Chestnut Grove Community; two grandsons, Adam and Ethan Carter of Victoria Community; and several nieces, nephews and other close relatives.


RUBY CLYDE FLOWERS


Ruby Clyde Flowers, 70, of Enterprise, died Saturday, November 13, 1999, at her residence in Enterprise.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 20, at Morning Star Baptist Church of Enterprise with the Rev. Eddie Engram officiating. Pastor: Fredrick ALvin. Burial will follow at Hardshell Cemetery in New Brockton.


TOWN JACKSON, JR.


Town Jackson, Jr., 81, a resident of Enterprise Nursing Home in Enterprise, formerly of Arlington, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999, in Enterprise.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 20, at 1 p.m. at the Good Hope A.M.E. Church in Arlington with the Rev. George Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Dunnaway Cemetery in Lamison with the Chapel Hill Mortuary of Enterprise directing.

Visitation will be held today, Thursday, November 18, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Levite Funeral Home Chapel, 814 Headland Avenue.

The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service on Saturday.

Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Louise JOHNSON-Jackson, and a son, Town Jackson, III.

He is survived by his children, Annie Grace (Walter) Webb of Westberry, New York, Willie (Vera) Jackson of Cedar Springs, Georgia, Tony (Idell) Jackson of Arlington, Virginia (Robert) Powe of Kinsey, George (Carolyn) Jackson of Columbia, Charlie (Ida) Jackson of Dothan, Cleveland (Sarah) Lilly of Kinsey, Sarah (Kim) Richardson of Birmingham, Clara Smith of Arlington, Henry (Margie) Smith of Carrollton, Georgia, and Alvania Smith of Arlington; a special friend, Lilly Smith of Arlington; a brother, Josh Bridgs; a sister, Annie Moore of Cleveland, Ohio; 25 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews relatives and friends.

Edith Mae WATERS Johnson, 90, of Level Plains, ded Tuesday, November 16, 1999, in Enterprise.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 19, at First Baptist Church of Level Plains with the Rev. Wallace Duke and Rev. Roger Stone officiating. Burial will follow at County Line Baptist Church Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Johnson will be taken to the church one hour before service time. Visitation will be at Searcy Funeral Home after 4 p.m. today, Thursday. The family will receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home tonight, Thursday, November 18, from 6-8 p.m.

Mrs. Johnson was a life-long resident of Level Plains. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Blanche Waters; her husband, Clayton Johnson; and one brother, Obetus J. Waters.

Survivors include eight children, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Averett of Dothan; James E. Chancey of Phenix; Tom Chancey of Houma, Louisiana; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Chancey of Longwood, Florida; Joyce Lopez of Miami, Florida; Mr. and Mrs. Terry Chancey of Orlando, Florida; Mr. and Mrs. Danny Mathews of Orlando, Florida; and Shirley Jones of Level Plains; 21 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

KATIE LEE GRANT


Katie Lee Grant, 77, of Andalusia, died Wednesday, November 17, 1999, in the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Andalusia with Rev. I. F. Feagans, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Southside Cemeter in Andalusia with Hammond Funeral Home directing.

Body will lie in state at Hammond Funeral Home Chapel after 4 p.m. today, Friday, until 10 a.m. Saturday. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. at the church.


WILLIE LOUISE (FRANCIS) HAYES


Mrs. Willie Louise (Francis) Hayes, 90, of New Brockton, died Thursday, Novm=ember 18, 1999, in Enterprise. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Searcy Funeral Home.

Edith Mae WATERS Johnson, 90, of Level Plains, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999 in Enterprise.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, November 19, at First Baptist Church of Level Plains with the Rev. Wallace Duke and Rev. Roger Stone officiating. Burial will follow at County Line Baptist Church Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

TOMMY THOMAS


Tommy Thomas, 48, of Andalusia, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999 at his home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 20, at First Baptist Church on Watley Street at 3 p.m. with the Rev. John Sanders III, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Southside Cemetery in Andalusia with Hammond Funeral Home directing.

The body will lie in state at Hammond Funeral Home Chapel after 5 p.m. today, Friday, Nvember 19, until one hour before the funeral on Saturday. The body will lie in state from 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

ARTHUR GREENE CHILDS, 74, Enterprise, died Friday, November 19, 1999, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan.

Funeral services will be held today, November 21, at 12:30 p.m. at Searcy Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Calhoun and Rev. Rob Paul officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery under the direction of Searcy Funeral Home.
Survivors include: wife, Louise A. Childs of Enterprise; three daughters, Elizabeth Nealie and husband, Jerry Folds of Columbus, Georgia, Jackie Childs of Enterprise, and Tammy G. and her husband, Les Swain of Eufala; four sons, Arthur V. Childs of Enterprise, Larry L. and wife, LuAnn Childs of Enterprise, J. Bruce and wife, Gail Childs of Prattville, and Eddy S. and wife, Ginger Childs of Enterprise; 19 grandchildren, August Huey of Ozark, Little Van Childs of Dothan, Angela Couch of Albany, Georgia, Valerie Bradley of Albany, Georgia, Stephanie Jones of Enterprise, Kevin Lee Kennington of Columbus, Georgia, Jerald W. Folds of Columbus, Georgia, Patrick Folds of Columbus, Georgia, Chris Folds of Phenix City, Bradley Childs of Prattville, Brett Childs of Prattville, Leslie Swain of Eufala, Gregory Swain of Eufala, Gabe Childs of Enterprise, Chase Childs of Enterprise, Rebekah Riley of Enterprise, Hannah Riley of Enterprise, Betsy Sykora of Fort Walton, Florida, and Sarah Sykora of Fort Walton, Florida; and six great grandchildren, Ryan Folds, Jessica Folds, Blake Huey, Payton Couch, Alexis Jones, and Preston Danford.

Mr. Childs was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin Childs and Nealie Elizabeth ALLEN Childs; his sister, Eva Marie Phelps, and brother-in-law, Charles Phelps; sister, Ruby Childs; brothers, Gillis and Gilford Childs; and his granddaughter, Shelby Childs, daughter if Eddy.

Mr. Childs was born in Jack on February 13, 1925. He married Louise A. REEVES from Coffee County in 1946. He served in World War II and the Korean conflict. Mr. Childs worked at Bill Heard Chevrolet in Columbus, Georgia as service manager for large trucks. In 1969, Mr. Childs opened and operated Opelika Truck Repair in Opelika. In 1974, Mr. Childs returned to Enterprise to take care of an ailing sister and brother-in-law. Mr. Childs then decided to open Child's Muffler Center. The original muffler shop in Entrprise is on Geneva Highway and has been in the same location for over 25 years. Mr. Childs has owned mufflr shops in Enterprise, Dothan, Phenix City, Eufala, Auburn, Troy, Montgomery, Geneva, Mobile, Opelika, Columbus, Georgia, Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Crestview, Florida. Mr. Childs could jokingly say he had sold more mufflers in the past 25 years than anyone in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Mr. Childs was active in the business until the last few years, when he spent most of his time with his friend and companion, "Baby", his pet poodle. Mr. Childs was known for his kindness to his customers, whom, when he saw in his stores, he always had time to stop and share a story with them. Mr. Childs will be missed by his family, friends, customers and his pet poodle.


AGNES F. PLANT DeVANE


Agnes F. Plant DeVane, 84, Elba, died Friday, Novmber 19, 1999, at the Enterprise Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held today, November 21, at 2 p.m. at Hayes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tony Dye officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Elba under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.

Survivors include: two daughters, Helen Kellner of Dothan, and Gennette Simmons of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; a son, John D. Plant of Elba; a brother, Ed Fillingim of Jack; a sister, Inez Senn of Enterprise; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.


DENNIS HAYWOOD EVANS


Dennis Haywood Evans, 72, of Enterprise, died Friday, November 19, 1999 at his home in Enterprise.

Funeral services will be held today, Sunday, November 21, at 3 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Joel Jackson, Rev. Ken Shoemake, and Rev. Kerry Saxon officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowlawn Cemetery under the direction of Searcy Funeral Home.

Mr. Evans will be placed in the church one hour prior to funeral time.

Mr. Evans was born on May 13, 1927, in Garlandm North Carolina. He was a retired veteran serving 22 years in the United States Army. Upon retirement from the Army, he owned/operated Evans Tire Store in Daleville until 1980. Mr. Evans served for several years as superintendant of Macedonia Water System and was a member of the Daleville Masonic Lodge, Alcazar Shrine Temple in Dothan, Daleville VFW, DAV of Enterprise, and Macedonia Baptist Church, Enterprise. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Community Care Hospice, 117 South Main Street, Enterprise, Alabama 36330, or Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include: wife, Maria Evans of ENterprise; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Linda Evans of Daleville, Ronnie Evans of Enterprise, and Peter and Jeanette Evans Anderson Island, Washington; five sisters, LaRue Pate of Garland, North Carolina, Evelyn Coble of Garland, North Carolina, Inez Johnson of Garland, North Carolina, Joann Herring of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Sandra Hyder of Lexington, South Carolina; one brother, Mike Evans of Carolina Beach, North Carolina; and two step-grandchildren.


WILLIE LOUISE (FRANCIS) HAYES


Mrs. Willie Louise (Francis) Hayes, 90, of New Brockton, died Thursday, November 18, 1999, in Enterprise.

Funeral services will be held today, Sunday, November 21, at First United Methodist Church in New Brockton with Rev. Ben McKee and Rev. Richard L. Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in New Brockton City Cemetery under the direction of Searcy Funeral Home.

Mrs. hayes will be placed in the church one hour before service time.

Mrs. Hayes was born on June 11, 1909, in Howe, Texas. She was a long-time resident of New Brockton. She was the choral director at New Brockton High School for many years and she taught piano to many students in the area. Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her sisters, Myrtle Preble and Pearl Hornaday of Kansas City; a grandson, Stanley Sawyer; and a son-in-law, Ray Sawyer. Memorial donations may be made to: First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 117, New Brockton, Alabama 36351.

Survivors include: her husband of 69 years, Max P. Hayes of New Brockton; a daughter, Maxine Sawyer of Enterpruse; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Pam Hayes of New York City, New York; two grandsons, Mark Sawyer of Pensacola, Florida
and Scott Sawyer and his wife, Beverly of Atlanta, Georgia; two granddaughters, Susan Sawyer of Atlanta, Georgia, and <>Holly Hayes of New York City, New York; two great-grandsons, David Sawyer of Pensacola, Florida and Philip Sawyer of Atlanta, Georgia; and two brothers-in-law and wives, James K. and Dorothy Hayes of New Brockton, and Richard and Bernice Hayes of Elba.
