It is an icy cold day at Jerdan Weyr. You wake up as the sun slants through your window and onto your face. You dress in wherhide clothing which actually takes most of the chill out of you. You walk down from your spare room into the Lower Caverns to get a cup of klah. You spot your friend R'don as you walk in, and you decide to catch up on things with him.
"Hello," you say sitting down next to the brown rider. He seems like he didn't hear you because he is staring off in the distance. You follow his gaze and see that he is looking toward a table near the hearth where the green rider Laurilyn is chatting with a friend. "Hello," you repeat more loudly this time.
R'don jerks out of his gaze. "Oh! Hello," he says staring at you.
"What were you looking at," you ask teasingly.
R'don turns away blushing. When he finally says something you can't understand him. "Nothing.....nothing.....don't worry....."
"I'm sorry," you say sincerely. "I shouldn't have teased you like that. It is none of my business."
"It's okay. Somebody was bound to find out sooner or later," he says dissappointed.
"Find out what," you say curiously.
He looks at you amazed. "You mean... you couldn't... tell," he stammers.
You give him a broad wink. "Of course I don't understand what you mean," you say innocently.
R'don catches on to your joke. "You didn't understand what? I wasn't doing anything at all," he says stifling his laughter with great difficulty. Finally, you both burst into laughter. After he gets partial control over himself, R'don manages to say, "Do you want to come with me back to my weyr?"
"Sure," you say glad at the chance to catch up on the news and see R'don's brown Dedith.
You follow R'don out of the Lower Caverns, across the Bowl, and into the weyrs. You go up a flight of steps and turn to the right. R'don leads you down the long hall and up another flight of stairs. You follow him to the second weyr, and he steps aside to let you through. It is a tidy weyr with all the supplies neatly put away and well taken care of. It opens up to a large ledge where you can see an adult brown leisurely sunning despite the cold. You are astounded at the size of the brown.
"Oh my, Dedith is enormous. The last time I saw him he was only shoulder height. He has grown quite a bit," you say studying the dragon.
"Yes, he has," R'don says laughing at your astonishment. "Come over here and sit down," he tells you.
You walk over to the table in the corner and sit down in one of the two chairs. "So, what is the news around here," you ask after you are settled.
"Not much really. There are two clutches on the Sands. One is Gold Isabeth's , and the other is Gold Mikath's . Isabeth has a clutch of sixteen eggs. Mikath has a clutch of fifteen eggs. Isabeth's clutch should hatch soon, so we will have new hatchlings to train. We are still on Search for Mikath's clutch. That's about it," he says shrugging his shoulders and giving you a half smile.
"That's all the weyr news," you say sarcastically. "I thought you said nothing much was happening here."
"Well, I guess there's more happening than I realized," R'don says reflectively.
"I guess so. If that's all the weyr news, tell me what has been going on with you recently," you say smiling at R'don. Just as he is about to reply, a blue fire-lizard and a gold fire-lizard come out of between and land on his shoulders. "Hello, Yoshi," you say scratching the blue's eyeridges. "Hello, Zara. Where have you two been all day?"
They both chirrup replies. R'don laughs. "They have been sunning themselves on the roof," he says as the pair launch themselves from his shoulders and land on the bed. "It looks like all that sun has made them sleepy. Either that or they just ate," he says smiling at them as they fall asleep.
"How is everything with them," you ask curiously.
"Well, Zara's first clutch hatched about a sevenday ago, and Yoshi caught a wild green about three days after that. So, it would seem to me that everything is perfect," he says nodding.
"Speaking of mating, when is Reamith due to fly," you ask taking a sip of the luke-warm klah.
R'don looks at you totally shocked at the directness of the question. "Well not for some time. There are many dragons who fly before she does," he says after a long pause.
"Really? Do you no how many?"
"About thirteen," he says calm again.
"Do you plan on having Dedith in the flight," you ask casually.
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I do," he says confidently.
"That was mainly what I wanted to know. I have some errands I need to run. So forgive me, but I must go," you say gulping down the remaining klah and getting up.
R'don follows you to the door. I hope you will visit soon," he says opening the door for you. "Until then, have a safe journey." You thank him for his hospitality and wish him luck in all things as you walk out to do your errands.
