Rammstein 2000 - The year in retrospect

Get there god damn new cd people, don't be laisy just go buy it...

New stuff

2000 is drawing to a close. So it's time to look at it's events and to look at what the coming year will bring. Rammstein closed themselves in the "creative cell" this year and worked on Mutter, slaved away on Mutter - and 2001 will reveal the fruits of their labour. In April this year, shortly before the band went to the recording studio in the south of France, they gave a live performance in Berlin of their creative work so far for the members of the FanArea.

Rammstein also appeared live at the end of July at the Fuji Rock Festival - the band's first performance in Japan. After that it was back into the studio, first to Belgium and then to Sweden. The music and the sound are now ready and Mutter only needs a face – a single, a single cover, an album cover, a video. We will let you know about the release date as soon as possible.

What has happened this year on the Rammstein Homepage? April saw a graphic overhaul of 'HOME' and 'SPECIAL', and the creation of the 'GALLERY'. In July the 'TIMELINE' went online and in October we extended the 'FORUM' with the 'Discussion and Connection boards'. Throughout the year we have collected a few contributions from the 'FORUM' which we particularly liked. Feast your eyes on this:

Rammstein was formed in 1993 by Richard Kruspe (guitar), Paul Landers (guitar), Till Lindemann (vocals), Oliver Riedel (bass), Christoph Schneider (drums) and Flake (pronounced flah-keh) Lorenz (keyboards).

Rammstein (German for "battering ram") has built a loyal following in their native Germany with their loud industrial rock and pyromania-filled live shows (lead singer Lindeman -- a former Olympic swimmer -- is known to set himself on fire in the middle of performances).

Their debut album, Herzeleid (Heartache), was released in the United States in 1996. Macabre film director David Lynch selected two songs from this album, "Rammstein" and "Heirate Mich" to appear in his movie Lost Highway.

Rammstein's follow-up, Sehnsucht, (Longing) was released in Germany in 1997, where it entered the album charts at No. 1. In February 1998, the CD was distributed in the United States by Slash Records.

This initial flirtation of their Armageddon-style music was followed up with the band's second album Sehnsucht which was recorded in late 1996 on the island of Malta. This album was released in August 1997 in Europe. In the US through Slash Records with two extra tracks which are English versions of "Engel" and "Du Hast."

Rammstein has toured the States in 1998/1999 together with great bands like KORN,Limp Bizkit and Orgy on the Family Values Tour.

In November 1998 Rammstein released a coverversion of "Das Modell" by "Kraftwerk"-, including the unreleased track "Kokain" and a Rammstein Computergame. In July 1998 Rammstein have released a n English single named "Stripped" which is a Depeche Mode cover-song and which is featured on the album "For the Masses". It kicks some serious ass!!!

Rammstein released a live CD in August 1999 it's a 97 minutes Rammstein show in Berlin and it also includes 3 Quicktime movies of the songs Wilder Wein,Weisses Fleisch and Tier.

RAMMS+EIN, the best band in the world, is made up of six men from Germany (former East Germany, actually). Here are some basics on them.

THE INTERVIEW - PART 4

Paul, Flake and Schneider comment on the Rammstein show

The final part of the interview in which Rammstein answer your questions personally will be online in April.

Have you ever had the feeling on stage of playing really badly? Paul: Yes, definitely. Flake: Every now and then there are days when we play badly (after big parties etc.). The feeling disappears throughout the course of the concert however.

When Till hits himself on the head with the microphone during 2Sehnsucht2 does he use artificial blood or is he genuinely injured? Flake: The blood is real because Till hits himself on the very same place every evening. I don1t understand it either. He can take a lot it seems.

Why don1t you play 2The Meister2 at concerts? Schneider: We can1t play all our songs. There is no particular reason for not playing 2The Meister2 at concerts. Flake: The choice of songs is based on decisions about the dramatic affect we want to create.

How does the American audience differ from the German audience? Schneider: Our audience in America is younger, the German audience has been behind us a lot longer. Flake: It1s easier to arouse the enthusiasm of our American audience.

Which concert in the USA/Germany have you enjoyed the most? Schneider: Berlin Wuhlheide Flake: Each member of the band perceives the concerts differently. I enjoyed Seattle myself.

Where do you prefer playing? USA or Germany? Schneider: We play where we are in demand and where we can afford to perform. Flake: I prefer playing in the USA because the attitude to music is more relaxed. Richard: The American audience has a more openminded attitude to music, they also get enthusiatic about instrumental parts and a good riff is always appreciated. As a guitarrist this is of course an incredibly good feeling. In contrast to, let´s say Flake, I enjoy being in the USA also in my spare time. Maybe Flake´s attitude to the US is quite literally connected to his stomach, he always longs for dark bread when he is in the States! For me the USA is the country where I met my wife, we got married there and I can certainly imagine moving to the States one day.

Where do you buy your drugs on tour? Do you take drugs? Schneider: It was a long time ago that I tried drugs. I1m not interested in drugs as a rule. Flake: I drink alcohol.

Where do you get your silver hair colour? Paul: It1s white cream. Who designs your clothes and where are they on sale? Paul: They are a combination of our own ideas and the work of tailor friends of ours.

How many people work on a show? What is the approximate cost of a show? Paul: Around 30 people. Costs and profit balance themselves everywhere except in Germany. As a rule we use profits to finance performances in countries where we haven1t played yet. That was how we got to America. Why do you show so little emotion during your shows? Paul: Because we are enjoying excactly that.

NAZIS? HEIL NO!

Rammstein, the German industrial band at the centre of a spat with London Records labelmates Goldie and Asian Dub Foundation over Nazi imagery in their video, have contacted NME to deny any link with the extreme right. Rammstein whipped up a storm of controversy after they used footage from Olympia, Leni Riefenstahl's infamous film of the 1936 Berlin Olympics for the promo clip for 'Stripped', their contribution to the Depeche Mode tribute album 'Various Artists For The Masses'. In a statement they declared: "We are not Nazis, Neo-Nazis, or any other kind of Nazi. We are against racism, bigotry or any other type of discrimination." They added that they had used the film simply as an example of a visionary work of art, rather than to endorse Nazism or fascism. A spokeswoman for the Anti-Nazi League applauded the band's strenuous denial of any Nazi links, but added: "I still think they are misguided on the Leni Riefenstahl front. They really should have been a bit more upfront about what they are trying to say. You have to be very clear in your message when you use those kind of images." A statement issued by their record company defended Rammstein's video: "The band are humanists... They eschew any connection to the Neo-Nazi movement or the philosophy of the Third Reich. "Furthermore, Rammstein believe that good art knows no political allegiances, thus, the Leni Riefenstahl footage they used for 'Stripped' is an expression of good art rather than an endorsement of Nazism. By using these images outside of their original context and in combination with other media (the Russian newsreel footage, the music of Depeche Mode sung in English) the band hopes to create a collage that conveys a broad range of emotions." London are now set to go ahead with the release of their debut UK single 'Du Hast' on November 16. 'Stripped', which features on the Depeche Mode tribute album 'Various Artists For The Masses', out now, could be released at a later date as a single, London records said.

Everyone knows about it. The Colorado killing. As much as everyone has their different opinions. There is only ONE true one--- Rammstein music does not make someone kill. Unfortunately people have used them as the scapegoat, and they are taking the biggest blow from the media than any of the other accused bands. Why is that? They're foreign, and German. Well Ill tell you otherwise. Rammstein do NOT give you the idea to "Go shoot several people". There new CD i heard is to out in mid April, i hope that everyone buys it, i know i will.....RAMMSTEIN for life....

The Music RAMMS+EIN (RAHM-SHTINE, roll the R)- Many names have been given to describe our German rockers. Flake said someone once that I totally forgot (it was long), and I've heard the words Tanz-Metal or Dance-Metal a lot. Industrial has been used. Heavy metal has been used. But overall, it's everything, like in Flake's description. I promise I'll look for it. RAMMS+EIN are bigger than some of you might think. Their first CD was Herzeleid and was on the German Top 10 for 2 years until their second CD, Sehnsucht, came out, debuting at Number One. They've made plenty of music videos, too bad America doesn't play any of them, except the occasional Du Hast and the apparent debut of Sehnsucht on MTV.

DISCOGRAPHY: Click on the Track number to hear a WAV of the desired song. This might take a while to get up considering I suck at webpages.

HERZELEID: RAMMS+EIN's first album. The cover became a big issue in Germany, even though it was just a stupid photo with no meaning at all. The cover was different in America, but Your Truly got the import. Then it started skipping, so I gave it to Mom, kept the cover, and bought a new one with the American cover.

SEHNSUCHT: RAMMS+EIN's second album. The cover in Germany had the title written right on the jewel case, so you could have any member on the front. So naturally they don't do this kind of cool thing in America. So I'm stuck with Schneider even though I like the Flake pik better...oh well. You know, for some reason I keep cracking the case by accident...I handed over my first Sehnsucht CD to Mom when the later version with Stripped came out. She actually likes the English versions of Du Hast and Engel.

Track 1: Sehnsucht (Longing) Track 2: Engel (Angel) Track 3: Tier (Beast) Track 4: Bestrafe Mich (Punish Me) Track 5: Du Hast (You Hate/You Have, depending on one's outlook of the song. RAMMS+EIN says it's You Hate, though) Track 6: Bück Dich (Bend Down) Track 7: Spiel Mit Mir (Play With Me) Track 8: Klavier (Piano) Track 9: Alter Mann (Old Man) Track 10: Eifersucht (Jealousy) Track 11: Küss Mich (Kiss Me) Hidden Tracks: 12: Engel English Version 13: Du Hast English version ------------OR------------- 12: Stripped

The RAMMS+EIN ORIGINAL SINGLE KOLLEKTION: This was a box set of six Singles. Once RAMMS+EIN had a contest for a signed one. I would have killed for it. I didn't win. Oh well. There will be a next time!!

That's the Box Set. I wrote the titles in different forms on purpose, to show you basically how it was written inside the single case. There are other singles, by the way. Here they are.

DU RIECHST SO GUT '98: (This is a big one, kids) 1 Du Riechst So Gut '98 2 Du Riechst So Gut Rmx by Faith No More 3 Du Riechst So Gut Rmx by Günter Schulz-KMFDM & Hiwatt Marshall 4 Du Riechst So Gut Rmx by Sascha Konietzko-KMFDM 5 Du Riechst So Gut Rmx by Olav Bruhn-Bobo in White Wooden Houses 6 Du Riechst So Gut Rmx by Sascha Moser-Bobo in White Wooden Houses 7 Du Riechst So Gut Rmx by Jacob Hellner/Marc Stagg 8 Du Riechst So Gut 'Migräne'-Rmx by Günter Schulz-KMFDM 9 MULTIMEDIATRACK: ORIGINALVIDEO DU RIECHST SO GUT '95 STRIPPED: Well, we have to wait until this one comes in...

Then there's the latest one, Live aus Berlin, which is a live album. I ordered the import double CD, so that I'll put up later. I'm too lazy to do any more today and put up what's on the single CD.

MUSIC VIDEOS: I've seen most by now. DRSG'95 you can see here (if I can get the CD-ROM drive to open then you'll get the better QuickTime one). Others I have on videotape. The only two I haven't seen fully are Seemann and DRSG'98. But I've seen pieces of each, plus piktures.

These are the videos out: DU RIECHST SO GUT '95 SEEMANN ENGEL DU RIECHST SO GUT '98 DU HAST STRIPPED SEHNSUCHT And don't forget ASCHE ZU ASCHE, which I learned was a video when my friend won a tape full of videos on eBay. I have no idea when it was made so forget trying to make me put it in order. Who wants order anyway?! Note how there are two Du Riechst So Gut's. This is because the one from 1995 sucked. Have a look-see (if you haven't yet)and commence laughing. It was incredibly dumb, so funny, no wonder they changed it in 1998. It's a whole new side to RAMMS+EIN! There were also two versions of Du Hast. The German one and the American one. They were both in German, of course, but the German one had better stuff in it. It was a little longer I think and added a few scenes (or should I say, the American version was shorter and cut out a few scenes). Du Hast and Engel make me want to go out and rent a few Tarantino movies. Sehnsucht didn't premiere in America yet, and I doubt it ever will (stupid, stuuupid MTV!!). I got the video in advance (they had promo copies) for free at our local independent CD store, and also I saw it taped. We at first thought it was a stupid live show where Till and everyone were lip synching. THEN we find out it's the video. Thank God.

RAMMS+EIN also has two home videos I know of. The Family Values '98 tape isn't really theirs, but they are in it. The other is Live Aus Berlin, which actually has a Censored and Uncensored version. The Censored one (for children under 18, although no one really cares and gets the Uncensored for everyone, like me -=smile=-) is without the infamous Bück Dich (now apparently spelled Bueck Dich, although I like the ü better than the ue) scene Till and Flake got arrested for and thrown in jail overnight for in Worchsester, Mass. just this year. Some people say this video sucked. I say it kicked some serious ass. So do most of the other RAMMS+EIN fans out there.

Well, that's about it. Unless you want me going over my bootleg tapes, which my friend got then let me copy to another tape. But that won't be necessary...ja? Hit Parader by Winston Cummings

Oh those wacky Germans! From the land that's brought us everything from the last two world wars to the space noodlings of Kraftwerk now comes the latest Teutonic "invasion"....a band called Rammstein- a loud, unpredictable, decidedly metallic unit that has used their nation's eclectic cultural tastes to help inspire their one-of-a-kind sound. As proven throughout their latest album Sehnsucht, as well as through their co-starring role in this fall's Family Values tour (which is headlined by Korn), vocalist Till Lindemann, keyboardist Flake, guitarists Richard Kruspe and Paul Landers, bassist Oliver Riedel and drummer Christoph Schneider seem intent on making a fast and permanent mark upon the hard rock landscape. To put it in the most basic terms- and paraphrasing the immortal words of a now-deceased music scribe- Rammstein makes music to invade Poland by!

Make no mistake about it, while Rammstein may still be new to a lot of Stateside rock fans, back home on the Rhine they're about as big as a band can get. Forget about such past Teutonic terrors as the Scorpions, in the late '90s Rammstein are setting sales records across the European continent that no other band can match! These guys continually rank higher than even the mighty Metallica in magazine and radio polls, and each of their two previous discs have sold more than 500,000 units- making them among the most successful European hard rock discs of the decade! And now that they're finally beginning to make a dent on American sales charts (despite the fact that they refuse to sing in anything but their native tongue) it would appear as if the sky is truly the limit for Rammstein. Indeed with the growing success of Sehnsucht, and their growing notoriety thanks to both MTV and Family Values tour, it seems as if the German metal unit may be on the precipice of true international stardom.

"We have been quite lucky in our efforts to succeed all over the world" said Landers through an interpreter. "In America, things began slowly, but once we started to have our songs played on the radio, and then we began to tour, people began to notice us a great deal more."

The very concept that a band that doesn't sing in English...or even speak the language, is making such significant inroads into the American market-place is nothing short of amazing. Traditionally, non-English-singing hard rock bands have struggled to gain even a marginal foothold on U.S. shores yet such a fact seems to have little impact on the Rammstein brigade. With their name translating into "ramming stone", and a sound that fits that vivid word image, this sextet sees no reason to change anything about their unconventional approach. To their way of thinking, their sound- which in addition to featuring the expected guitar crunch, also presents an exotic array of whistles, children's choirs and techno-babble- is already too strange to meet conventional tastes. Certainly a little Germanic warbling added to the mix ain't gonna hurt nuthin' too bad.

Unfortunately, considering the band's staunch approach, and their reliance on both German language and heritage to inspire their music, the haunting images of their nation's war-like past have followed Rammstein around virtually from day one. Even the German media has set out to uncover the true meanings behind some of Rammstein's more controversial and mysterious songs- with no evidence what-so-ever of oft-rumored Nazi-leanings ever even showing up. The band's members themselves are as confounded as anyone as to where these obviously false allegations first started. Some believe it may have to do with the cover art of their 1995 debut disc, Herzeleid, where the six shirtless, well-toned band members come across as poster boys for some new "master race." Other group members insist it's just the German media doing their best to cause trouble.

"It has been so silly," Flake explained. "That was just a photo of us- not some political statement! The German media sometimes gets carried away with such things. There was even one critic who said that the way Till rolls his 'r's' when he sings is supposed to mimic the way that Hitler used to speak! How silly can they get. We've never written a political song in our life, and we probably never will. It's just reverse discrimination because we are German. Kraftwerk had the same thing happen to them twenty years ago. If we were Spanish or Dutch, there would be no problem."

Still, with their harsh sound, their unusual lyrical approach, their penchant for utilizing fire during their live shows and their bizarre album art (the cover of Sehnsucht shows the head of each band members trapped in hideous wire masks) one can understand the derisive looks often hurled Rammstein's way. It's been that way for this until ever since they seemingly emerged from nowhere in 1993 to inflame the souls of Germany's headbanging brigade. With their tightly synchronized guitar thunder, highly unusual keyboard passages and deep-throated vocal attacks, there was no mistaking Rammstein's approach with that of any other band!

When the band started to play live in 1994, word of their outrageous blend of horror movie imagery and heavy metal music instantly made them sensations throughout the notoriously fickle German underground. But rather than falling prey to the ever-common "on top today, gone tomorrow," nature of the German music scene, Rammstein played their audience like a well- tuned drum, continually coming up with new and exciting ideas for both stage and sound. By the time they got around to releasing Herzeleid (which translated to "Heartache"), the music masses were primed and ready to make it an instant hit. Fueled by such songs as Heirate Mich (which eventually ended up on the soundtrack of the 1996 movie, Lost Highway- a flick produced by Rammstein fan David Lynch) that disc stayed in the Top 10 of the German album charts for an astounding two years... right up until the release of Sehnsucht. The new disc entered the German charts in the coveted Number One position and has already gone double platinum. Now these distinctly different Euro rockers hope that a little bit of their Teutonic sensibility will carry them to similar heights on this side of the Atlantic. But, in all honesty, Rammstein aren't exactly holding their breath waiting for it to happen. "The reaction our music has already generated in America has been incredible," Landers explained. "On the Family Values tour we have met some wonderful fans who seem to understand exactly what we are trying to do with our music. That has brought big smiles to all of our faces."

New Album Details Recording starts this month on Korn's fifth album. Michael Beinhorn (Hole, Marilyn Manson) has been confirmed as producer.
