As Early as the 1880's, Companies began using scent as a powerful advertising tool. Cards were sprayed or dipped with a scent (Usually a perfume) to give the potential buyer a feel of the product they were marketing. Many of these cards still exist today.

The 1960's

Sometime in the early 1960's Trading card companies tried the same thing, though usually with vile or pungent scents. One of these card sets were Fleer's "Smellies" set. These are believed to be the 1st attempt of applying 3M's Microfragrance to a marketable item.
