Young Women United for Oakland (YWUFO)
About YWUFO!
- WHO WE ARE: YWUFO is an organization run by and for young women of color between the ages of 14-20 who are living on the street economy or live in low-income communities of Oakland, California. At YWUFO, these young women take on the responsibility of providing street outreach to young women and running a community based non-profit organization. They are hired and receive many hours of training. With their peers, they create projects to improve the lives of young women like themselves, seek funding for these projects, hire personnel, and evaluate their work. YWUFO staff work with adults advisors (consultants) and peers as trainers to learn the skills necessary to take on roles such as community leader, social activist, researcher, web designer or wherever their passions lead them.
- OUR MISSION: YWUFO’s mission is two fold: 1) YWUFO provides street outreach, health and wellness information, peer education support and referrals to low income, disenfranchised young women 14-21 who are supporting themselves on the street economy and/or are living in poor communities. 2) YWUFO works to empower low income, disenfranchised young women 14-21 who are living and/or supporting themselves on the street economy by providing employment and leadership opportunities within the agency at a living wage.
- YWUFO is proud to be a project of The Tides Center.
