Breeding policies

To have kittens, could easily be one of the most exciting things to me. That is the end result of lots of hard work and bags of money. (Thought cat breeding is an easy way to make lots of money? Think again! Exactly the opposite is true!)

To breed cats, a breeder must be sure that he/she will have a market for those kittens - and that does not mean any market. New owners are carefully chosen. Most of my cats go as pets, but I want to be sure these kittens will be well looked after and will get lots of love and attention, even when they are big. A breeder should be prepared to keep all kittens if he/she cannot find proper homes for them, or even to stop breeding for a while if the market is not good. To give away kittens, is not at all an option. If somebody is not willing to pay for a kitten, how will he look after it if it gets sick?

I, on my side, try to sell only well socialized kittens that are of course healthy and strong. Thus my kittens grow up around people in the house. The children love to play with them, and I motivate them to do it, so that the kittens can be used to lots of handling.

Because the health of the kittens are of utmost importance, I will never mix kittens of different litters. I prefer to only have one litter at a timme, but it is not always possible because everybody tends to come on heat at once. I almost never have two litters of more or less the same age, and also never have more than two litters between 1 and 12 weeks old. Because the kittens must get the most attention possible, is is much easier to raise one litter at a time. Also sand boxes can be hard work when the kittens learn to use it, and with more than one litter it can take all your time!

Another very important thing to mention to future Anleo cat owners, is that you must be prepared to keep contact with me. I am prepared to take back cats at any stage, and the new owner thus must at first get in touch with me if he cannot look after his kitten or cat anymore. I want to know how my kittens are, how happy they are, and if their owners enjoy them. That is the joy of breeding - to hear about all the happiness an Anleo cat brought into somebody's life.

New owners must sign a kitten contract before they get their new kitten. They also must pay the kitten in full before the kitten will go to them. Most of the time a deposit is required to book a kitten.

To prevent any accidental breeding or backyard breeding, Anleo cats are neutered/spayed before they leave home. Only when somebody signed a kitten contract for breeding, this does not happen.

To prevent breeding of sick or bad natured cats, records are kept about all the kittens. In Anleo Cattery all adults that tend to have weak kittens all the time, are neutered/spayed. That will also happen if kittens proof not to have nice temperaments. That was the reason my first male was neutered, even though I have paid a fortune for him.

Another policy that I stongly believe in, is to place neutered/spayed adults to nice pet homes if I can find any. It might sound that I do not really love them or just want to make space for new cats, but the main reason is in fact that I love them so much that I rather will place them with somebody where they can get ALL the attention, rather than to keep them, and they have to share attention with a couple of other cats and kittens. It is not easy, but luckely a Sphynx adapts extremely easy, even an adult. As long as they can get all the attention, they are happy, no matter where they are. So why keep them if they cannot sleep in my bed and sit on my lap the whole day? Then rather place them with somebody where they CAN do that!

Care for kittens

Kittens are born under supervision, and their weight are measured every day until they start eating. The smallest kitten gets supplement feeding until he catches up. From three weeks they are bathed weekly with hibiscrub. Also from three weeks they are given solid food three times per day (mostly wet kitten food). If I have kittens in the winter, I start nosodes against snuffles from two weeks. At three weeks the kittens are given iron supplement for human babies for a couple of days. Because mothers milk lacks iron, they start licking the floors from about 3 weeks if they do not start eating at that stage.

At age 7 to 8 weeks they get their first three-in-one inoculations. They are introduced to dry kitten food, but will still receive their wet food until the day they leave home. The reason is that I put the inside of moducare tablets in their wet food. That helps build their immune systems.

On week 11 - 12 they get their second inoculations, and they leave home 2 weeks after that - usually on week 14.

Present litters

Kittens from the following breeding are taking over the house at present:

1. SpCh Anleo Sanspelo Saffiro (blue/white) X Anleo Crystalskye Sahira (tortie/white)
They have four red/white male kittens, born on Oct 22, 1999.

2. SpCh Anleo Sanspelo Saffiro (blue/white) X GrCh Anleo Apophis Polka.
They have 5 kittens, two males and three females. They are not available for breeding. They were born on November 29th.

Price and other costs.

The price of a Sphynx kitten depends on the show quality of the kitten, and also on whether the kitten is going as a pet or for breeding. In Africa the price for a pet kitten starts from R2000.00 and up. In the rest of the world the price starts from $750.00 and up.

The price for the Peterbalds depends on the hairlessness of the kittens. Prices start from $1000.00 and up. Only bald kittens will be available for breeding.

Anleo Cattery will ship kittens to places in the world where quarantene is not necessary. The price of the airfare to the main international airport in the other country will be paid by Anleo Cattery, unless the price of the airfare is far above the normal rates.

The buyer of the kitten is responsible for the cost for neutering/spaying of the kitten. The price is R200.00 for a female ($40.00) and R150.00 for a male ($25.00)
