CHARACTER PROFILES
Z Fighters:
Goku:
Goku is the hero of Dragonball Z. He is a
peaceful, good-natured, honest, trusting,
and protective soul. He is also the most
powerful warrior on Earth and the first to
become a Super Saiyan in over 1000 years.
Having honed his skills and strengthened his
spirit to a level never achieved by any being
on Earth, Goku is able to fly, shoot energy
beams from his hands, move at incredible
speeds and, when in a pinch, power-up to a
fighting level so high it creates an energy
aura around his body and makes him turn
blond with green eyes... becoming in effect
a walking nuclear war. Goku hasn't learned
these skills just for fun, his life is forced
down this path as he battles the evil
Saiyans in the final battle to save the Earth.
When the Saiyans arrive on Earth it is a
shock in more ways than one. Goku finds out
the mysterious secret of his own past: he is
Saiyan formerly known as Kakarot who was
sent to Earth as a baby with the mission to
conquer the planet. Luckily for Earth a near
fatal head injury "scrambles" his programming
and instead of becoming a destructive
super-warrior he becomes an innocent
pure-of-heart defender of Earth. Goku was
raised by a peaceful, wise old man namedGohan, after whom Goku later names his first
son. Goku is always there to help his family
and friends and he is very protective of
them. If he has a weakness, it is his trusting
nature.
Goku has many powerful fighting techniques
including the powerful Kamehameha Wave
and the Kaio-ken which he learns from King
Kai. His last and most powerful weapon is an
immensely powerful energy ball which
garners energy from all sources on the
planet, concentrates it into one sphere, and
then releases it in one mighty swoop. This
ball can be used only once and must be
guided carefully for it can destroy the planet
if used inappropriately.
Gohan:
Gohan, Goku and Chi-Chi's first son, was
named after his adoptive grandfather.
Physically, he resembles a young Goku right
down to the tail and the propensity to
become an uncontrollable raging Giant
Monkey, while spiritually, he is good and
pure of heart as well. Because of his
protective mother, Gohan starts out as a
wimp, but when the Earth is threatened, he
reveals his tremendous potential as a fighter
and uncontrollably "powers up" in order to
rescue his father from a desperate situation.
Because of this he is forced into training in
preperation for the arrival of the Saiyans.
Gohan's training is at the hands of Piccolo
because his father is learning the fighting
expertise of King Kai.
Piccolo and Gohan develop a special bond,
which causes Piccolo to step in front of
Nappa's mighty blast to save Gohan's life.
Gohan's loss of nerve in the battle against
the Saiyans cost all his friends dearly. But
he is determined to make up for his
cowardice by traveling to the planet Namek
to find the Namekian Dragon Balls and wish
his friends back to life.
Gohan's tremedous power is accounted for
by the incredible mix between Earthing and
Saiyan, which produces an even stronger
being than either Human or Saiyan alone.
Even though Gohan becomes the most
powerful non-fused character, he never
attains the love of fighting that Goku has.
Krillin:
Krillin has been Goku's best friend since
they studied martial arts together under
Master Roshi as kids. Krillin provides comic
relief in tense situations as he tries to keep
up with Goku and some of the other more
powerful warriors. But don't get the idea
that he's a helpless buffoon. A good fighter
on his own accord, he's always there to help
Goku. He can and has saved his friend's life
more than once. In fact, Krillin unleashes an
incredibly powerful energy blast shaped like
a flying disc that literally slices through
mountaintops.
Krillin is incredibly dedicated to his friends,
especially Goku, and holds friendship in high
value. He is willing to fight against the
Saibamen and Saiyans even though he
doesn't want to die. Goku encourages Krillin
to have confidence in his own abilities as
Krillin learns to be a remarkable fighter --
that is, for an Earthling..
Krillin volunteers to be one of the crew going
to Namek to gather the Namekian Dragon
Balls. On this journey he once again gets to
prove his loyalty, courage, and fighting skills.
His power is enhanced even further by the
eldest Namekian, Guru, when he awakens
the sleeping power within Krillin. He will need
every ounce of this power he has to fight
against the evil forces assembled on Namek.
Picollo:
Goku's onetime arch enemy, Piccolo is
the second strongest being on Earth. He
wears an extremely heavy cape as constant
training for his muscles. He is renowned for
his powerful energy blasts as well as his
ability to split into two or four seperate
entities. Green like a lizard, Piccolo has the
ability to regenerate any limbs that he may
lose in battle. This comes in handy more
than once.
Piccolo is a native of the planet Namek. He
was reborn from an older, evil Piccolo, who
in his last moments of life spat out an egg,
which then hatched into this "new" Piccolo.
He starts out fighting against Goku to rule
the world, but when the Saiyans arrive
Piccolo is forced to join forces with Goku and
the others to defeat a greater more powerful
evil.
At first the alliance with Goku is uneasy, but
as the story unfolds, their bond becomes
stronger. Piccolo even steps in to train
Goku's son Gohan for the upcoming battle
against the Saiyans. Piccolo is confused by
the bond he sees with Gohan and by his own
actions. Is he training an opponent who is
stronger than him, and why does he risk his
life to save Gohan's? Gohan sees the good
within Piccolo and their relationship brings
this good out of Piccolo. In the showdown
with Vegeta and Nappa, Piccolo saves
Gohan's life by jumping in front of an energy
blast targeted at Gohan.
Bulma:
Bulma has been around from the
beginning. In Dragon Ball, she was a mixed
up teenager with blue hair, a pink outfit, and
a personality quirk that wouldn't allow her to
shut up for a second. She was immature,
emotional, self-centered, impatient,
argumentative, boy-crazy and given to fits
of hysteria.
Now, she's blossomed into a woman with a
lot of the same personality quirks, but the
team would never get along with out her.
Bulma is a mechanical genius who can
operate and fix anything. She is the one
that discovers the capabilities of the Saiyan
Scouter and enhances it for their own use.
It enables her to save the day more than
once. She also takes the lead in finding a
space ship to go to Namek and joins Krillin
and Gohan in the journey.
Yamcha:
Yamcha is a longtime friend and ally of
Goku's that possesses great fighting
spirit. He is usually accompanied by his
devoted cat companion Puar, and he is
characterized by his intense fear of
women. He is anxious and willing to be
trained by Kami and to join the battle
against the Saiyans, even though he
understands that the odds are against
them. In the heat of the battle Yamcha
volunteers to fight the Saibamen instead
of Krillin because Krillin has already been
brought back to life by the Dragon Balls
once, which is the limit.
This good looking warrior still has an
attraction for Bulma but stood her up the
last time he had a date with her because
he didn't have enough money to take her
out. Thus, he is hesitant to see her again.
Bulma apparently forgives this and
contemplates marraige to him, but then
Yamcha is eliminated by the Saibamen.
Fortunately for Yamcha, he can be brought
back to life by the Dragon Balls.
Tien:
Tien is a three-eyed man who was
originally trained as an assassin under
one of Master Roshi's rivals. After
realizing he did not want to be an
assassin, his best friend Chaiotzu and him
switched sides and became Z fighters.
Chaiotzu and Tien can communicate
telepathically. His fighting techniques
include the ability to hover in the air,
throw concentration bombs, and split into
two or four seperate entities. Tien can
stop a waterfall with a blast and crush
rocks on his head.
Tien is excited about being trained by
Kami to fight the Saiyans. He volunteers to
be the first to fight the Saibamen, wins
the battle, and goes on to fight against
the Saiyans. He loses his best friend when
Chaiotzu completes a suicide mission.
Chiaotzu:
This white-skinned, red-cheeked little
prince is a devoted companion of Tien.
Noble and unselfish, Chiaotzu does not
hesitate to throw himself onto Nappa's
back and self-destruct in an attempt to
save his comrades.
Yajirobe:
Yajirobe is one good guy that is not
interested in fighting. He is perfectly
content being on the sidelines, usually
with food in his mouth, instead of being in
the battle. He doesn't willingly go near
danger and isn't willling to go in the
Pendulum Room to train to fight the
Saiyans. Yajirobe does come through in
the end when he sneaks up behind the
Giant Vegeta Monkey and cuts off his tail.
This ends Vegeta's metamorphosis,
greatly reducing his strength, and allows
the Z fighters to win the day.
Vegeta:
Vegeta is a prince of the planet Vegeta,
and is the most powerful and feared of
all the Saiyans. Cunning, ruthless, and
cruel in battle, he enjoys toying with any
helpless creature who opposes him. He
comes to Earth with Nappa, another
Saiyan, to conquer the planet. Vegeta and
Nappa underestimate the Z fighters by
thinking the mission will take only three
days, when in fact, they never succeed.
Vegeta gets so fed up with Nappa that he
mercilessly kills him. Vegeta looses the
battle on Earth, but escapes death
because of Goku's generosity.
Vegeta goes to Namek in search of the
Dragon Balls with the wish for immortality.
Discovering he cannot defeat Frieza alone,
he fights with Gohan and Krillin, and then
with Goku and Piccolo when they arrive.
Dende:
Dende is a child from the planet Namek,
and is even younger than Gohan. Gohan
and Krillin first meet Dende on their trip to
the planet Namek to gather the Dragon
Balls. His family was assaulted in battle by
Frieza's henchmen. Since that time, Dende
has been watched over by Krillin and
Gohan.
With the healing powers the eldest Namek,
Guru, bestows on him, Dende becomes an
important asset to the Z fighters. On
Namek, he saves both Krillin and Vegeta
from death. Dende later replaces Kami as
the guardian of the Dragon Balls on Earth.
Nail:
Nail is the personal guardian of Guru, the
eldest Namek and father of all the
Nameks. His role as personal guardian is
very important because Guru is very ill. If
Guru should die, the Dragon Balls will
cease to exist on Namek.
Like all Nameks, Nail is aware of the
severe consequences of allowing the
Dragon Balls to fall into the wrong hands,
and is willing to do whatever it takes to
prevent this from happening. Nail is a very
skilled fighter and later fuses with Piccolo.
Good Guys:
Master Roshi:
An ancient and wise master of martial
arts, Roshi has accumulated great power
and knowledge. He is very old, completely
bald and has a long, white beard. Because
he has lived for countless years on a
deserted island with only a turtle for a
companion, he is also called the "Hermit
Turtle". His home, the Kame house,
continues to serve as a gathering place for
the good guys.
Although he may appear strange, frail and
harmless, Master Roshi is indeed a great
warrior. He originally trained Goku and Krillin
when they were young boys and taught
them the "Kamehameha", a power which is
channeled through the hands, creating a
wave of tremendous power that can destroy
mountains. The first earthling to ever
understand how to nurture and control the
Power of Light, Roshi trained Goku and Krillin
in its use.
Master Roshi also trained Ox-King (Chi-Chi's
dad) and Grandpa Gohan (Goku's adoptive
grandfather) years ago.
Chi Chi:
A beautiful girl who Goku saves when
they are young, Chi-Chi grows up to
become Goku's wife and the mother of
his son Gohan. Chi-Chi is a loving wife and
a patient, doting mother, but she believes
their son should develop his brain instead of
his brawn. This sometimes brings her in
direct conflict with Goku and his friends who
put a high value on fighting skills.
But that doesn't mean that she can't take
care of herself. Her father, the great warrior
Ox-King, who trained under Master Roshi
with Goku's adoptive grandfather, wanted to
make sure to bring up a daughter who could
take care of herself. So he molded her into a
formidable fighter who can defend her loved
ones against the forces of darkness.
Ox-King:
Ox-King is Chi-Chi's father, making him
Goku's father-in-law and Gohan's
grandfather. Ox-King was one of Master
Roshi's best students. He is still very
powerful, but played a bigger role in Dragon
Ball.
Kame:
Kame is from the planet Namek. Long ago
he split into two entities, one good and one
evil. Kami embodies all the good, while
Piccolo (the Piccolo that spat out the egg of
the newer Piccolo) embodied all the bad.
Because of this link between them, if one
gets killed they both die. Also, since Kami
created the Earth's Dragon Balls, if he dies
the balls cease to function.
When Goku goes to train under King Kai,
Kami brings the Z Fighters together for
training in the famous Pendulum Room. The
Pendulum Room is the center of all past,
present and future. Tien, Chiotzu, Yamcha,
Yajirobe and Krillin enter there and
experience first-hand fighting with Saiyans
of the past. Kami teaches them all he knows
and then sends them back to Earth.
Kami lives a floating tower high above the
Earth where he watches over what's
happening. He has some ability to see into
the future and can sense the good changes
in the newer Piccolo. Later he fuses with
Piccolo to make Piccolo stronger.
Mr. popo:
Mr. Popo is the servant of Kami. He has
been on Earth longer than the present Kami,
and will remain to be guardian for the next
Kami. He helps Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan get
to Namek by showing Bulma the location of
Kami's old ship.
Oolong:
Oolong is a cowardly shape-shifting pig
that joined forces with the good guys. He
can only change shape for a short period
of time and then has to rest. Oolong
played a much bigger role in the first
series, Dragon Ball.
Pwar:
Pwar is the devoted companion of
Yamcha. They met Goku and Bulma
together in the first series, Dragon Ball.
Pwar is a shape-shifting blue cat who
went to the same school as Oolong. Unlike
Oolong, Pwar can shift shapes without
having to stop and rest every few
minutes.
Dr. Brief:
Dr. Brief is Bulma's dad and president of
Capsule Corp. Capsule Corp makes the
capsules Bulma often uses that turn into
large objects like cars. His technical genius
also reveals why Bulma is so handy with
machines. Dr. Brief repairs the spaceships
so that Goku and the others can go to
Namek. Bulma's mom also makes an
occasional appearance, but we never find
out her name.
Korin:
Korin is a wise martial arts master that
lives in "Korin's Tower" and is a cat.
Korin grows the magic Senzu beans that
often help the Z Fighters in battle. The
beans heal and energize anyone that eats
them.
Baba:
Baba is the comical sister of Master
Roshi. Short and squat, she uses her
crystal ball to see into the future, or to
see what is happening in the present in
other locations. When the television
coverage of the Saiyan fight is interrupted,
Master Roshi, Bulma, Chi-Chi, Ox-King and
Oolong gather around her ball to see how
their friends and loved ones are faring.
Guru:
The eldest of all Nameks, Guru created the
Dragon Balls on the planet Namek. He is
also father to all of the Nameks, as
Nameks are unisex and are hatched from
eggs. The Dragon Balls will disappear when
he dies, and there is much concern
because he is very elderly and very sick.
He has considerable power and wisdom,
although he is not physically strong
enough to fight for himself. Among his
many abilities is a technique which he uses
to bring forth the dormant, secret power
lying within Krillin and Gohan. Guru also
bestows upon Dende the ability to heal
wounds by touching the injured.
Bad Guys:
Frieza:
Frieza is the most powerful and evil
being in the Universe with no rival being
even close to his strength. Upon learning
about the legendary Namekian Dragon
Balls, Frieza is consumed with a desire to
summon the Eternal Dragon and wish for
immortality. Then he could rule the
Universe, unrivaled, forever.
His ruthlessness is well known.
Understanding the capability of the
Saiyans as fighters and their uncanny
ability to gain strength after recovering
from injuries, Frieza knew this one race
might one day challenge his pre-eminence.
Thus he eliminated their planet and all but
a handful of Saiyans who happened to be
away at the time.
In his search for the Dragon Balls on
Namek, Frieza ruthlessly and predictably
eliminates all who get in his way. The very
mention of his name strikes dread and
fear in the hearts of all who have heard of
him. This prompts King Kai to warn Goku
not to even think about battling with
Frieza.
Frieza has an elite fighting team known as
the Ginyu Force. They consist of five
beings: Captain Ginyu, Recoome, Guldo,
Burter, and Jeice.
Captain Ginyu:
Captain Ginyu is the leader and senior
member of an elite group of mercenaries
known as the Ginyu Force. One of the
unusual features of the Ginyu Force is
their ability to "strike a pose". Captain
Ginyu takes this very seriously, although
most of the poses are quite comical. But
pity the rookie who takes this posing
lightly, for the militant Captain has no
patience with slackers.
Together with Jeice, Burter and Guldo, this
team was hired by the evil Frieza to
capture all of the Dragon Balls on the
planet Namek, and thereby grant him a
wish for whatever he desires.
Captain Ginyu has the ability to switch
bodies with an opponent using a special
technique.
Jeice:
Jeice is one of the members of the elite
mercenary group known as the Ginyu
Force. He has super fighting powers and
incredible speed. Together with Burter and
Captain Ginyu, the remaining Ginyu Force
(two members have already been killed)
have been enlisted by the evil Frieza to rid
the planet Namek of all defenders who
oppose his efforts to gather the Dragon
Balls, thereby achieving his wish for
immortality.
Like all of the Ginyu Force, Jeice does
elaborate posing when he begins a fight,
and takes his posing very serious. Jeice is
one of the younger members on the team,
and has a strong, British rock singer
accent.
Burter:
Burter is one of the fastest beings alive,
and is a member of the Ginyu Force, a
mercenary group of elite fighters enlisted
by the evil Frieza to help him gather the
Dragon Balls. Together with Captain Ginyu
and Jeice, the Ginyu Force is to ensure
Frieza gains all of the Dragon Balls on
Namek, allowing Frieza to achieve his wish
for immortality.
Like all of the Ginyu Force, Burter is very
focused on "striking poses", which he
does before he engages in a super attack.
Although the poses are often very comical
in appearance, they are struck with
genuine sincerity.
Racoome:
Recoome is a member of the elite
fighting team, the Ginyu Force. He is one
of the first of the Ginyu Force to fight the Z
fighters on Namek, and can take a lot of
punishment. He almost finishes off Gohan,
but Goku arrives on the planet just in
time.
Like all of the Ginyu Force, Recoome is
very focused on "striking poses". Recoome
is rather comical, especially as his teeth
start to fall out.
Guldo:
Guldo is a short, four-eyed member of
the elite mercenary group known as the
Ginyu Force. He has the ability to freeze
time for those around him by holding his
breath. Guldo almost destroys Krillin and
Gohan with his time freeze, but Vegeta
steps in and saves them both.
Like all of the Ginyu Force, Guldo takes
posing very seriously. He is the first
member of the Ginyu Force to be
eliminated.
Zarbon:
Zarbon is one of Frieza's top two
henchmen. Zarbon is a very handsome
green-haired fighter. He even catches the
eye of Bulma despite the fact that he's a
bad guy.
Zarbon cannot keep up the flawless
appearance forever, he has to transform
into a huge reptilian-like creature to beat
Vegeta. Zarbon beats Vegeta once, but
loses and dies at their second
confrontation.
Dodoria:
Dodoria and Zarbon are Frieza's top two
henchmen. Dodoria is a fat, pink
spiky-headed alien. On Namek, he runs
into Vegeta while chasing Gohan, and is
killed by him.
Nappa:
Nappa is Vegeta's sidekick who came to
help destroy the Earth. He was also
Vegeta's caretaker as a child, and is now
very fearful of him. Nappa brings the
Saibamen to help fight the Z fighters, and
does much of the early fighting himself.
Nappa may have had more brawn than
brain and tended to get overexcited and
careless when fighting. Nappa did manage
to eliminate Tien, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo
before Goku arrived back on Earth. Goku
stepped in just in time to save Gohan, and
kill Nappa.
Saibamen:
The Saibaimen were seeds brought by
Nappa when he and Vegeta came to
conquer the Earth. When Nappa's seeds
were planted, they grew into these
Saibaimen. Their sole purpose was to fight,
and in fact Vegeta trained on his home
planet by fighting these brainless
creatures.
With a power level of 1200 each, the
Saibaimen were worthy opponents for the Z
fighters. Yamcha was killed by a
Saibaimen, but most of the Saibaimen
were killed by Krillin. Vegeta grew bored
and killed the remaining Saibaimen.
Raditz:
Raditz is Goku's older brother. He came
to Earth to see whether Goku had
completed his mission of conquering the
planet. Angry and intolerant, Raditz can't
understand why it has taken his brother
so long to destroy the helpless humans.
When Raditz learns Goku had lost his
Saiyan "programming" as a child and was
now Earth's defender, he kidnaps Gohan
with the threat of killing him if Goku
doesn't bring him dead humans.
Goku and Piccolo go after Raditz and
successfully pin him once. But ruthless like
all Saiyans, Raditz plays on Goku's
emotions and lies to his confused brother
to avoid being destroyed. The minute he is
saved however, he instantly turns on
Goku.
Raditz is killed when Goku sacrifices
himself by holding Raditz from behind
while Piccolo eliminates them both with a
single blast. His last words reveal that two
even more powerful Saiyans will be
coming to Earth in one year in order to
destroy it. And, unfortunately, his scouter
(technologically advanced eyepiece which
gives location and power rating of
opponents as well as acting as a communicator) transmits information
about the Dragon Balls to the Saiyans.
