Aphonopelma anax is a terrestial species from Texas and surrounding areas. They are brown in base color. This species seems to take advantage of the fact that humans have invaded their areas. In south Texas, this species has set up their burrows in people's yards. They seem to like to live in the lawns that are cut and kept. Sometimes you can find a burrow every couple meters.

This species is commonly called 'The Texas Tan Tarantula'. This name has become the 'catch-all' name aplied to a variety of unknown tarantulas. You may buy a Texas Tan, but in fact not have one.

This species is fairly easy to breed. The spiderlings are very small and are slow growers.
