Green with Envy

“That’s bull-shit, Daisuke,” Ken replied and Daisuke swore he could feel his insides cringe. Ken stood across from him, his arms folded across his chest and his face set in a scowl. The only thing that gave Daisuke hope were his eyes, which reflected only deep concern.

After a few moments had passed with out further response from Daisuke, Ken decided to try a different approach. He took Daisuke’s hand and pulled him a few feet over to the sea wall where he sat down. With a deep sigh, Daisuke followed suit.

“I know something’s bothering you,” Ken stated softly. The only indication that Daisuke even heard was a small twitch of his mouth.

“Is it Hikari and Takeru?” he asked, if it were possible, even more softly. Still the slight waiver in his voice was unmistakable. Daisuke did offer him a small smile at that. Ken had an uncanny ability to hit the nail on the head, although for all the wrong reasons. Daisuke glanced further down the beach to where Takeru and Hikari were completely wrapped up in each other’s attentions. Most people moving by smiled or at the very least pretended not to notice.

“Nah,” Daisuke paused, glancing back down the beach again. This time Ken’s eyes strayed there as well.

“Well…yeah,” he changed his mind. Daisuke smiled softly at Ken, whose eyes were once more fastened on him.

“It’s just…”Daisuke stumbled a bit, unsure exactly how he could express this. “I wish that could be us…I guess,” he finished slowly. “I hate always worrying about what everyone would think, what they might say or do if we were together like *that*,” he finished, nodding down the beach.

“I know,” was all Ken said before he leaned over to kiss Daisuke. It took Daisuke’s mind a moment to realize just what his normally very reserved Ken was doing. Unfortunately, the soft kiss was over much too soon for either boy’s taste. Ken placed his arm around Daisuke’s waist, pulling him close. In a perfect would it would have been more, but sometimes just being close was enough.
