Li is a transfer student from Hong Kong, and moved into Sakuras class at school. He came to Japan for a few reasons, to catch the Clow cards, and because he had no choice. His mother went away and he does not have a father (He died). At first he was Sakuras constant rival, always putting Sakura down, telling her off and telling her how bad she is at catching cards. He is also your average perfect fourth-grader, which brings him and Sakura to be even. Li is a descendant of Clow Reed, the originator of the Clow Cards… Because of he is a descendant of Clow Reed; he has really strong powers, a funny board thing (the lasen board, which releases a light to help him find things), a sword and a costume. He met Sakura quite early in her quest, as she was beginning, so he constantly criticized her for not being able to fully use and understand her powers. Li also wants Clow cards, but he never explains why. He is caring though, slowly and gradually, he decides to be friends and partners with Sakura, and they team up to fight and capture Clow cards as a team, together. It’s all spoilt when Meilin comes to stay though…
Li has a cousin called Meilin, who I am sure he was betrothed to. Meilin is his fiancé, and at 10 years old he couldn’t have made such a decision himself. Meilin wants to marry him, and I don’t think he has a choice. Li loves Meilin as a sister, but isn’t in love with her. He doesn’t know how to explain this to Meilin, so he doesn’t. It would break her heart.
Li is not very good at being friendly with Sakuras friends. He calls Kero a stuffed animal. He did however like Julian, but that is only because he was attracted to Julian’s magical power. In the Japanese version, both he an Sakura fancied Julian! I know it sounds strange, but in the Japanese version Sakuras brother and Julian were a couple. Yes, they are both male! As we are on Sakuras brother, this is some one else Li hates. The first time Tori saw Li, he was being nasty to her,and whenever they met after that they glare at each other. When Li and Sakura were catching the Firey card Li threw a fire incantation at Tori and burned the sleeve of his shirt!
