Princess Mercury, was one of the guides and protectors of Princess Serenity in the past of the Moon Kingdom. Her personality brought forth the need for the Princess to study to learn the knowledge it takes to be a great ruler like Queen Serenity.
Like the other Scouts, she was reincarnated in the future by the power of Queen Serenity. She was born into the Mizuno family; her mother being a successful doctor. Ever since a young age, Ami enjoyed studying and reading to be successful in her future. Her dream was always to be a doctor like her mother.
Ami's path crosses Usagi's when she is transferred to the same school as Usagi. Many of the students gossip about Ami because of her intelligence. It doesn't take Usagi long to befriend Ami, and once Luna meets her the suspicious feeling that Ami might be one of the Scouts they are looking for sinks in. The fact is confirmed when Ami is attacked by one of the drones conjured by Jediete. The symbol of Mercury glows brightly on her forehead and it is confirmed that she is, indeed Sailor Mercury.
