CHICAGO, ILL
Hip Hop NewsWhat if? - What if old school writers like Raven, Mane, Rafa & Riddle battled new School writers like Alter, Jonski, Seph & Jerne? It doesn’t matter exactly who or what crew your from, but only if your Old school or New school. Any different combination of writer’s from any crews are being invited to draw the line for a one day battle that may even have them going against their own boys! Well this is an invitation for any writers interested in joining - (Mission Infinite) part #1 of an new annual battle of old school versus new school that will take place between august 25th though the 31st every year. B2B will provide the walls to paint on & all you have to do if you are one of the chosen 20 contestants is to bring your own paint (a 20 can minimum.) Team members will have to learn how to work together & produce a large scale wicked battle burner to destroy the competition. The contestants will separate into 2 units - one old school the other new school. A battle will ensue with only 8 hours to finish the piece. Unit leaders Jerne & Riddle will pick the contestants from various citywide crews. This is a friendly battle focused on using teamwork & skills to out do the opponent, so anybody acting like a gang banger or anyone who got serious beef with the contestants shouldn’t show up. Speaking of, there is going to be security there since it is a community city project & every one attending the event except the contestants MUST NOT BRING GEAR. Believe me the cops will arrest you in a heartbeat if they find anything on you! They already busted 3 guys for writing on the floors near the battle walls. A board of peers (writers from various city crews) will judge the battle. There is no cute prize, only the hardcore pride of being the glorious victor of this insane bout! This is the most exciting event in graff since the C.T.A battles. Jem Riddle & Jerne one will host a battle with 20 contestants from various crews. The idea is to break up the enlisting crews to compete with themselves in order to demonstrate their individual skills. 10 new schoolers will do battle with 10 old schoolers. Some of the battles will be among their very own crewmembers, do you think you got what it takes? To enter you must submit your name & crew as well as what side you want to burn on (Old school or New school) on the B2B web page in the “guest book” section along with a way we can reach you when we decide to chose the contestants. We will also have a” back list” of writers who can join the battle if some of the writers are a no show. We are also looking for judges. To become a judge just write your tag & crew in the guest book, that you’d like to be a judge & a way we can contact you to confirm your Status as a judge. Please keep in mind if you have problems getting through our site there are short cuts here via “links” on www.hypercomics.net& Da ill-state of mind The official “AOL” B2B web address is as follows, www.angelfire.com/art/BORN2BOMB
An Ancient Game!Another great contest of skills is up & coming even as we speak & it is called the annual Hip Hop Olympics! Don’t let that goofy title trick you. It is a hardcore contest of skills proving themselves through individual battle in Graffiti bombing, Graffiti burners, mad rhyming (lyrical skills), D.J battles & of course breaking battles. B2B as well as many other crews are doing what it takes to make this project a reality & building up this event. If you have a way you can participate or help us out please contact us through our web-site. We could really use your help on this.
A “Hip Hop” festival? Why, yes it is! We know that many writers & hip hoppers out there are quite frustrated trying to make money. Especially if you have to cut your profit with a storeowner that you might be selling merchandise for. Well, soon those days will be over. Again as we speak B2B & other hardheaded ghetto geniuses’ from various crews are trying to set up an effective free site some where in this beautiful city where all hip hop marketers can come and sell there goods. This would be an open public place that would be widely advertised & be set up for 8 hours once per month through out the summer. Participants would bring original dope T-shirts, Mix tapes & CDs, Fly caps, graff & Hip Hop Magazines as well as an assortment of other paraphernalia to sell to the public. Rumored sites are Douglas Park, Humboldt Park & 63rd St beach. We will keep you posted on this event.
On a sad note…We (B2B) want to offer our condolences to M.U.L crew for their recent loss of one of their skillful writer/artist. It is a terrible thing to lose one of your own. It is reminiscent of the bad situation some years ago with Preach, Cash & Kre-8. We hope all goes well with ending any troubles that the cops may have caused too. To see newspaper clip click here.
(C.T.A) Busy little beavers…The Douglas blue line is going to be under construction starting this year. It will provide wide-open spaces & be a one-sided platform line. It will be comprised of state of the art accommodations including heating booths and strong lighting systems not to mention sneaky surveillance cameras to nab any unsuspecting criminals.
Lakeside controversy:Chicago is well known for its cool looking lakeside. Unlike New York it is a fantastic realm where everyone can enjoy the sleek look of lakeshore drive & Navy pier. Surprisingly a lot of active bombers want to keep it that way. The bombers replied; I think just putting up illegal pieces on the lakeside is the best thing. Bombing the tunnels & streets of the city is fucking great, but we would like the view side of the lake to be somewhat free of tags. We look at New York’s waterways & they look like shit. We are not softer than New York, were just smarter in that field because it’s about controlling the city not destroying it!
The battle field…Recently GAO crew battled ISM crew in a side to side bout hosted by B2B on a wall near 27th & Kedzie. The battle was close, but the winner was ISM mainly on the premise that their art was a little neater than their opponents. This may turn out to be a 2 out of 3 deal & the crews are expected to probably battle once more. In hindsight since B2B legally owns 2 large walls B2B offers a “rented space” where a crew can piece on a nice quality wall for a small fee of $50.00 a crew. In return their piece will stay up on the wall for at least 2 weeks & be featured on the Internet through the B2B web-site. To do this you must first contact & pay Riddle as well as provide a clear picture of your piece so he can post it on the site. When the crew starts piecing there must be a B2B present, because we often have a problem with uninvited writers getting arrested for trying to piece on our walls. An official pass is needed to paint on those walls, which will be temporarily granted to those crews renting the walls to prevent arrest.
The “Comics bench?!!!Yep! There is in the works a meeting place involving those who are fans of comics & those whos are comic artist. Fans who want to sell or trade comics are encouraged to attend. This will help artist get together & share connections as well as hook up & possibly form a comic of their own either on the internet or actually getting a book pressed. Comic fans replied; this will be different than going to a convention, because you meet other people just like you-People trying to make it in the biz, but now we can use our skills to tie down some connections & form a team. This is what companies in conventions are looking for, whole packages where a book can be pencilled, inked written & produced. Those kinds of teams are the ones usually picked up by companies like Dark horse, Marvel & others. We will keep you posted on these events.
Don’t sweat my Technique…There will soon be a category on the B2B web where writers from all around can critique other pieces. However most importantly is the sharing of knowledge where artists can let others in on trade secrets of the game like certain painting effects & how to make neat skinny caps & so on.
Shop Hip-Hop!New tapes & CD mixes coming out are readily available at small shops with a fair price tag. They are notably cheaper in price compared to places like coconuts or record town. Try a few places in the discount mall like “undercover music” located in Little Village at 3801 s, Albany. It is a small booth, but has a lot to offer for connoisseurs of cutting edge mix lovers. Debonair businessman “Chango” often cuts a fine deal for you when you come to buy a few mixes. There is also another shop of interest called “chucky’s” house at the archer super mall. The alternative store of style & Hip Hop called the Level is also a prime stop over for artist interested in buying caps (nozzles), urban clothes, & other Hip Hop paraphernalia. Underground wheels located downstairs in Ford City Shopping Mall also carries some graff magazines & videos, which often features breaking battles, etc. Among their merchandise is of course some fly skate gear & equipment for rabid street surfers.
Tag-bangers are out of style all ready! So cut that shit out!According to a recent poll L.A still retains the most “Tag-bangers’ & its all to bad for them. Most or all Chicago writers hate that shit! Those punk ass writers still on the tag-banging tip should give it up already! The real brothers down with the streets are indeed the Paint playas of these city-real writers with talent so they don’t have to go hook up with some gangbangas to show they got juice. So heres to all the bombers out there doing right & holding up the culture for what it is. In short terms for keeping it real!
The Rich are indeed odd!Gold coast activist artist Pierce Morgan known for his shock treatment of sex on art is critiquing hyper-gothic creator Jem Riddle saying; Riddle is an inadequate artist to try to control Hyper-gothics mainly, because the man is poor & holds no degree or certificate in the arts. Hyper-gothics is a system that should be used to learn faster & produce more art even if the art is controversial. Pierce Morgan has been using the hyper-gothic system to produce faster high quality art & intends to spread his views & influence on the system as he tours through Europe this coming July.
Nobody knows the trouble…Salski, legendary wild style artist has put his plans for an open exhibition of his cansprayacy philosophies & a gallery of wild-style art off, due to impending circumstances. A few weeks ago the man was caught in another ghetto misadventure which landed him in the can only to be put on house arrest. There is no scheduled date for the gallery, but we will keep you posted on events.
Dynamite sites! There are two growing sites that are of interest of late. One called the mix stop - alias Mixstop.com. It is a site that caters to DJ’s & their dealings with creating original beats as well as a critique on new mixes & music. Local DJ’s like Gabriel Rican Rodriguez & Super Dave are among the sites appealing beat artist. We also encourage you to visit the T.N.S site- TheNativeSoul.com where you can view new spots of graffiti art & set yourself up to get a wicked Tattoo from “Angel” at his state of the art shop.
