Campulung (COOM-puh-LOONG) -Muscel (moos-CHEL), the
former capital of Romania, is situated high in the Carpathian Mountains about 100 miles
north of Bucuresti. Above, the entrance gate at the Catholic monastery.

Although it's difficult
to see from this picture, there is a wide island in the middle of the street, with a
tree-lined pedestrian sidewalk. Before Ceaucescu, folks living in Bucuresti would often
vacation in Campulung. A popular activity for residents and visitors alike was strolling
down the sidewalk, during the day or in the evening. The sidewalk was often very crowded
-- so crowded that it was difficult to avoid bumping into nearly everyone you passed, and
of course offering profuse apologies. And so the street came to be known as "Bulevardul
Pardon!" |
