Moldovita (mold-oh-VEETS-ah) monastery was founded in 1532 by Petru Rares, son of Stefan cel Mare -- who had founded the first of the Bucovina monasteries, Putna, in 1466. This is the southern view of the monastery church, with its exquisite frescoes. (June/July 1998)

A view of the eastern wall. Romania's dry climate has allowed these frescoes to survive for over 400 years. (June/July 1998)

The northern wall, exposed to the elements, has not fared as well. (June/July 1998)

Part of the monastery, above, also houses a museum of bibles, wooden and precious-metal relics, and more. In front is a bust of Petru Rares; see close-up, below left. Among the relics is the ornate wooden throne of Petru Rares, below. (June/July 1998)
