Barbie Roswell Theater

Barbie Max and Liz TV Max and Liz

In October 1999 I became completely infatuated with a television show called "Roswell". Looking back, I don't know what in the world possessed me to become such an crazed fan of this series. I guess I must have been a little crazy! Well, my love for the show and particularly the two lead characters "Max and Liz" eventually connected with my love for dolls resulting in a series of vignettes known as "Barbie Roswell Theater" (also called "BRT" for short).

"BRT" sort of took on a life of its own and became an "internet style tv show". It even had its own fan base. I had people around the world telling me they just couldn't wait for the next episode. It was all very bizarre. Kind of like a mini "15 minutes of fame" moment. Its hard to believe that it all really happened, but it did. In fact, my good friend Julie recently informed me of a published book about the television show called "Crash Into Me - The World of Roswell" (yes, a "REAL" book, as Julie said, which is sold in bookstores and available on Amazon.com) that makes reference to the "Barbie Roswell Theater" phenomena (Click here to see an excerpt from the book.)

I invented "BRT" long before I created this "Doll Memories" website. My intention was to always keep them separate. Although they were connected in a certain way by virtue of the dolls, I had become very disenchanted with "Roswell" and wanted to put the past behind me. But time heals all wounds I guess, and I'm now able to look back upon the show more objectively. It was, after all, only a television show.

I was recently searching the internet and realized that with the exception of a few vague references, "Barbie Roswell Theater" had sort of disappeared. This saddened me in a way because I felt since "BRT" originated on the internet, it should still be there in some shape or form. Although the television show was cancelled in the spring of 2002, "Roswell" re-runs will be airing on the Sci-Fi network starting in January 2003. I thought maybe this was a good time to bring "Barbie Roswell Theater" re-runs back to the internet. And so explains this web page....

Since this is really a "doll themed" website, I won't bother you here with the details of the television show and why I became obsesssed with it. If of course you ARE interested, in this information and the history of how "Barbie Roswell Theater" was created, you can click the links below. I've also included a link to my favorite Max and Liz quotes and songs from the television series, just to give you an idea of the "dreamy" dialogue and music that hooked me on the show.

For those of you primarily interested in the "doll" aspect of "BRT", you won't be disappointed. I used a variety of late 1990's/early 2000's "Barbie" dolls to create the show. I invested in the latest and greatest "Barbie" fashions and props I could find to duplicate the series and its characters as closely as possible. I spent many hours setting these dolls up to take the perfect pictures to convey the essence of the show. I think "Barbie" fans will enjoy seeing the dolls "come alive" in this series.

Barbie Max and Liz TV Max and Liz

I have to warn you that some of the episodes may be difficult to understand unless you have seen the television show and are familiar with the plot. Also, I have to warn you that some of the episodes sort of have a PG rating. They are not really worse than anything you'd see on prime time television today, but just thought I'd let you know in case you were expecting something different.

"BRT" was basically a parody of the series and there are many inside jokes and veiled sarcastic references to actual events in the television episodes. If you are not familiar with "Roswell", try to look past this and see "BRT" as a parody of TV shows in general where common themes are overused, plot lines become convoluted and contrived, and where basically a set of "Barbie" dolls can easily take the place of the actors. (Of course, some actors can NEVER be replaced. However, the Barbie actors, in this case, were much more affordable.)

The important thing to remember is that this was all done in fun and to keep up the spirits of the Roswell fans. I really and truly loved the show. I just wish that they had broken my heart a little less often.

BRT Cast

A slogan once used for the "Barbie" doll was "We girls can do anything! Right Barbie?". Well "Barbie" gave me the opportunity to do "anything" I wanted to do with "Roswell". So when things weren't going the way I wanted them to go on the show, I used "Barbie Roswell Theater" to turn them around. I only imagine what could have been if those involved with the series had done the same.
