ADRIAN ARTHUR 'ART' EWALD
Adrian Arthur "Art" Ewald passed away July 1, 2003, in Clinton County, Iowa. Art was the fifth and youngest child born to Arthur Adrian and Levon Gelina (Imel) Ewald. Born April 26, 1951, he lived most of his life at the Ewald family homestead in Kingston, Ill. He was a baptized member of the Kingston United Methodist Church. After graduating from Genoa-Kingston High School in 1969, he attended Kishwaukee College in Malta. Art was a member of Genoa-Kingston FFA, where he became interested in raising show cattle. As a young adult, he continued this interest and participated in cattle shows, which were a lifelong passion that remained with him. Later, he was employed for a number of years by Wasco Nursery, where he continued the outdoor lifestyle he enjoyed and developed his knowledge of landscaping. On Nov. 2, 1990, Art married Christine Nieman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb. He continued regular attendance at the church with his wife and their son, Austen Arthur, who was born June 12, 1992. Shortly after his marriage to Christine, Art created and set up and then owned and operated his own business, Evershade Nursery and Landscaping. He then became a certified Master Gardener. His friendly, easy manner and the ability to relate to others, always taking time to listen, brought him many customers and friends. His genuine interest in his employees led him to learn to speak Spanish fluently, and he enjoyed their friendship and presence, including them in many of the family gatherings hosted at the Ewald residence. After long days of work, Art loved to take relaxing rides on his horse to visit neighbors and friends. His love for horses continued throughout his lifetime, and there was always a farm animal under his care. Art was know for his bonfire parties, family hayrides, jeep rides, horse rides and, in general, all outside family fun. He is survived by his loving partner of 13 years, Christine; a son, Austen; a brother, Edmund Ewald of Wisconsin; three sisters, Donna (George "Ted") Wallin of Genoa and Texas, Lynette (Victor) Pinion of Tennessee and Gelina (Roosevelt) Nunn of DeKalb; his mother-in-law, Clara Nieman of DeKalb; a brother-in-law, Gary (Sally) Nieman of DeKalb; two sisters-in-law, Becki (Barry) Owens of DeKalb and Lori (Joseph) Wiegele of Peachtree City, Ga.; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Levon Ewald of Kingston; his grandparents; and his father-in-law, Morris Nieman of DeKalb. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb, with Pastor E. George Krause and Pastor Marty Marks officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb.
