3.       Students sketch round mandala design incorporating personal symbols OR by using the initials to their name or their name itself.

Feb. 21st – Saturday: Regional VASE Competition

 

Feb. 23-27

·         Art History Lesson (depends upon artwork chosen for class)

1.       Discuss famous artwork/artist/style

2.       Reproduce/photocopy artwork and cut into 1” squares

3.       Each student receives an 8”x8” square and reproduces a corresponding 1” square onto the larger paper.

4.       Students put the reproduction of the famous artwork on a hallway wall for display.

Sculpture Segment

Mar. 2-6

·         Monday – introduce sculpture with team building exercise.  Build a 3’ high sculpture from paper and scotch tape.  When finished, must be able to hold up the weight of an eraser.

·         Wire abstract (due on Mon., Mar. 9th) (Small Artwork Grade)

1.       4” block of wood  with drilled holes; two or four holes

2.       Bend clothes hanger (or two hangers) and place ends into drilled holes

3.       Slide knee high hosiery over clothes hanger(s)

4.       Paint with white glue; let dry

5.       Paint with acrylic paints

Mar. 9-13

·         Wire abstract due at end of class period/Monday

·         Tues. begin Wire Sculpture Self Portrait. (Large Artwork Grade)

1.       Use several sizes of wire to sculpt a self portrait

2.       Make preliminary sketch using one continuous line for the contours of the face

3.       Using the sketch as a “map”, create self portrait from wire

4.       Historical aspect: Alexander Calder. Briefly describe Calder as an artist that created sculptural forms by bending, twisting and joining wire into a variety of shapes. Describe the artwork as almost being like a line drawing that has sprung off of the page and become a three dimensional sculpture.

March 16-20 – Spring Break

Mar. 23-27

·         Cardboard/Poster board Initial Sculpture (Small Artwork Grade)

1.       Review negative and positive space, pattern, movement, rhythm, repetition, contrast, variety, unity, emphasis

2.       Students’ initials are cut out of poster board – each student chooses type of font, must be a minimum of 2” tall

3.       Place the initials overlapping, building with them – glue together – creating a sculpture

Mar. 30-Apr. 10

·         “Found” Object/Papier Mache Sculpture (Large Artwork Grade)

1.       Bring in “found” objects: piano keys, broken china, license plates, rusty tin cans, electrical wire, bottle caps, and other miscellaneous items

2.       Cover a Styrofoam form with newspaper and glue for a papier mache base to form an animal.

3.       Place the found objects on the papier mache where they seem to “fit.”  Once the entire form is covered in “found” objects, spray paint the entire sculpture with one color to unify it.

1.       Colorful magazine pages, toothpicks and glue: roll magazine strips into “beads”. Use to make jewelry
