ANGEL CORELLA  (Principal of ABT)       

Angel Corella was born in Madrid in 1975. He began his ballet studies in Colmenar Viejo, and later studied in Madrid with Victor Ullate and Karemia Moreno.

In May 1991, Mr. Corella won First Prize in the National Ballet Competition of Spain. In December 1994, he won the Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the Concours International de Danse de Paris, dancing the pas de deux from Don Quixote and Le Corsaire.

Mr. Corella joined American Ballet Theatre as a Soloist in April 1995 and was promoted to Principal Dancer in August, 1996. His repertoire with ABT includes Solor and the Bronze Idol in La Bayadère, the title role in Billy the Kid, the Prince and the Jester in Cinderella, Franz in Coppélia, Conrad, Ali, the Slave and Birbanto in Le Corsaire, Basil in Don Quixote, the "turning boy" and the leading role in Études, the first sailor in Fancy Free, the Peruvian in Gaîté Parisienne, Her Lover in Jardin aux Lilas, Albrecht in Giselle, Camille in The Merry Widow, Cassio in Othello, the pas de deux Other Dances, the Blue Boy in Les Patineurs, the Son in Prodigal Son, the leading male role in Push Comes to Shove, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, the pas de deux from The Sleeping Beauty, Act III, Misgir in The Snow Maiden, Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, James in La Sylphide, Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, the second and third variations in Variations For Four, Her Lover in Weren't We Fools?, and leading roles in Americans We, Ballet Imperial, A Brahms Symphony, Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1, Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, The Leaves Are Fading, Meadow, Sinfonietta, Spring and Fall, Stepping Stones, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, Theme and Variations, Variations on'America' and Without Words.

Mr. Corella created leading roles in Baroque Game, The Brahms-Haydn Variations, Getting Closer and Known by Heart.

Mr. Corella appeared on television in a performance at the 1996 Kennedy Center Honors, and on an episode of Sesame Street in 1998. In December 1999, Mr. Corella danced as a Guest Artist at the Gala for the opening of the re-furbished Royal Opera House, as well as with The Royal Ballet. He also danced as a guest artist at La Scala.
