Runza
Ingredients
- Bread-frozen or made in bread machine
- 1 pound hamburger
- 1 head cabbage
- 1 onion
- Prepare bread dough
- In a bread
machine, you will need 2 batches of your Basic White
Bread
- If using frozen bread loaves, thaw them &
you will need several of them
- Chop cabbage
& onion & saute them in a skillet with a little oil
until tender
- In another skillet, brown
hamburger
- While the skillets are doing their
thing, prepare the bread dough, by rolling it out to
the size of runza you will want.
- For a meal
size runza, roll out about a 6 inch circle
- For
smaller portions (for kids) roll out a 4 inch
circle
- Combine hamburger with
cabbage/onion mixture, stir to mix
thoroughly.
- Place about 3-4 Tblsp. of mixture
in center of bread dough
- Fold sides of dough
over mixture & seal edges
- Bake in 375 degree
oven for about 15 minutes or till bread is golden
brown..You can freeze runzas and reheat
easily.
Variations:
- You can add a
little bit of cheese to top of mixture before sealing
edges.
- Hints:I bought some tart molds (I'm sure
you have seen them, they come in 3 sizes) and use
them to make my runzas..that way they all come out
the same size..I just roll out the dough, place the
dough over the mold, put filling in center of dough &
fold mold over & press, sealing the edges...alot less
work..I tell you those molds are the next best thing
since sliced bread..at least for making
runzas.
In Nebraska, there are Runza Huts
(fast food runzas) all over. When I moved to Arizona
I really missed them, so came up with my own version.
Everyone who has had mine, love them..hope you enjoy
them too.
