LOS ANGELES COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY, EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND CRIME PREVENTION MEASURE
This Proposition did not receive the 66% of the vote it needed to pass.
THE PROGRAMS WE SUPPORT:
AVALON-SUCCESS THROUGH AWARENESS and RESISTANCE (STAR) Program
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department teaches substance abuse and resistance education programs in the Los Angeles County area schools. These programs are usually taught to the 3rd through 5th grades which is normally funded by the school districts. In Avalon, we believe that the program should start in the 1st grade and continue with the students through high school. This way the program supports the students when they need it most, when peer pressure increases and the use of dangerous drugs occur.
In Avalon, our fund raising allows the expansion of this program.
C.E.R.T. Community Emergency Response Team
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. Using their training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event and can take a more active role in preparing their community. The CERT members in Avalon are registered Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Volunteers.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
The Neighborhood Watch Program is a highly successful effort that has been in existence for more than thirty years in cities and counties across America. It provides a unique infrastructure that brings together local officials, law enforcement and citizens to protect our communities. Many neighborhoods already have established Neighborhood Watch programs that are vibrant and effective. Neighborhood Watch creates an emphasis on citizen preparedness to provide an incentive for people to participate in this important community-based effort on behalf of their friends and neighbors. And when you help your neighbors, you help the nation.
If you are interested in any of these programs, please contact Crime Prevention Deputy Burt Lyon, at Avalon Station, (310) 510-0174 or e-mail at
