Abyssinians and Abyssinian Satins

ABYSSINIANS -- CAN YOU MEET THE CHALLENGE?

By Sheila Schwartz-Zych

From ACBA Guide Book 1989

Abyssinians are, to some, the hardest breed with which to work, but with time and experience they can become easy. I find the Aby to be the most challenging breed as no amount of grooming can alter its unique characteristics. First you must have an idea of what a real Aby is. Any Aby should have ten to twelve pinoint-centered rosettes placed strategically over the body. Four rosettes should be found in alignment across the rear. The other two, or possibly four, will be found on the shoulders--one or two on each. These sets of rosettes are called saddle, rump and shoulder depending upon their relative position on the body.

JUDGING THE ABYSSINIAN

Groups accepted for the Abyssinian and Abyssinian Satins are: Self-Solid-Agouti-Marked
ALL varieties are accepted for Abyssinian and Abyssinian Satins
The most points judged on an Abby is for (surprise!) the coat. 65 points are givien to the Abyssinian for their coat, and 70 points is given to the Abyssinian Satin.
The Abyssinian Satin should be judged in natural sunlight or incandescent light, to determine the natural "Satin" sheen.

GROOMING THE ABYSSINIAN

Abyssinian and Abyssinian Satins should NOT be bathed, unless abosolutely NECESSARY. Bathing the Abby's coat ruins the harsh texture that is desired for the breed. If your Abyssinian gets dirty, do this simple trick for cleaning it without water or soap: Take some cornstarch and sprinkle it into the coat of the cavy. (If you are going to attend a show, do this a week in advance). After a few days, get a toothbrush and gently stroke the fur upwards, in position with the rosettes. The cornstarch absorbs the dirt in the coat, and the toothbrush gently removes it. If you want, follow up with a wire comb. (Plastic breaks the fur). You will need to clip their nails weekly and check their teeth for Malocclusion.
