History
Struggling to gain recognition within the already overcrowded Cardiff student live music scene, All Life Ends were the original self indulgent goth metal act, and as such were overlooked by the vast majority of the conformist metalheads that this area of Britain attracts and maintains. Their struggle and musical innovation was frowned upon by their peers, branded as freaks and their music too different to break through the mainstream dogma the mainstream of Cardiff liked to perpetuate.
However the rock music society of Cardiff university was responsible for the first incarnation of All Life Ends, this being the place where long standing guitarist Wayne met Liz (bass)and Jon(guitar), in a band that was then under the moniker The Purple Turtles also in the band was first Vocalist Becky who was involved for quite some time until she left due to musical differences. After three performances at Student Union music events, the band were gaining a small amount of recognition within the scene and the metal populace of Cardiff unfortunately as "the band without a drummer or the band with a part time vocalist.
Vocalist Millie and synth player Catelynn add elements to the first demo tape (Sanguine Addiction).Unfortunately the band members had to scatter across the country, and the band was no more.
Wayne wrote 4 songs to develop the All Life Ends sound in a heavier direction. These songs from 1998 formed the core of the All Life Ends sound, however this demo tape was to be rejected by various record companies due to it's radicalism and possibly because the sound quality was awful too. All was not in vein it turned out, as the demo tape served to help recruit members of the next incarnation of the band.
First to recognize the potential within was mental metal maniac Ben, whose tentative vocal experiments were to evolve into the crushing Death Rattle of the modern All Life Ends. Ben was quick to begin the auditioning of new musicians to complete the band line-up; the quality and commitment level of musicians varied considerably and many guitarists did not fit the bill or lacked enthusiasm for this particular musical style. Next to the fold was Chris (placebo kid) Hurrell a guitarist for 5 years, also veteran of many bands and live performances, Chris was quick to pick up the old songs and to write new and crunching riffage- and giving All Life Ends acoustic and widely lead action unheard of since the demise of the original band. If the band were to progress further a live drummer was required, this would also be the first drummer ever to be a member of All Life Ends; would any drummer have the skill and endurance to match that of Dave the drum machine. Nick the Pagan appeared as if from nowhere to take up position on the drum stool and deliver devastating double bass control and atomic clock like syncopation. The burial plot was finally sealed with the recruitment of long time musical dark horse, mad Matt on bass guitar.
The '99 demo tape
was featured the following year in the March issue
of Terrorizer magazine receiving a welcome review and a score of
6/10 the band were happy to be introduced to the
world and felt
that work should begin on a revised demo tape
featuring all members
of the new band and a crunching production
courtesy of James
Howard (Author of the infamous Cradle of Filth
remix which
received much critical acclaim). The demo was
finally completed in
April 2000, but little happened for the band as a
result of it.
In October 2000,
Nick the Pagan transgressed unwritten laws within
the Ipswich metal scene and was kicked from the
band.
After a short radio appearance and features in
various European fanzines.
Unfortunately shortly after the recruitment of a new drummer, the band went
their
separate ways. Wayne continued to write music for a new demo which
was
completed in 2002 entitled Sunset of the End.
