GIG REVIEW FOR BRANDONS, ENNIS 29/05/04

The Sue Review

"So where to start….what a night! Music wise the lads were superb but sure I would say that anyway. But honestly having being to all their gigs to date I have to say they are going from strength to strength & getting tighter all the time (do I sound like I know what I am talking about???). They are getting very comfortable with playing to an audience & it is obvious they are enjoying it & having fun. The crowd seem to love that too along with the shirts of course. They go down well – I had my reservations at first but now I see what they are all about.

On the crowd & the venue I will try not to be too harsh! I think the fact there was a fleadh ceol in town didn’t help matters! Let’s just say everybody seemed to be on another wavelength altogether – there was an undertone of full moon fever. Whatever it was, the crowd were on for dancing & “rock & roll”, both of which they got plenty of.

It was my first time in Brandons for a live gig. The venue doesn’t really lend itself well as it is long & narrow. The stage is squeezed to the back of the premises and with columns on either side it was hard to see what was going on (& I was literally on top of the stage – I don’t know what chance you would have at the back of the bar). It certainly curtailed Rods free style bass playing (in fact I thought he was going to bring the stage down at one point).

….de other band…..could have been cooler (well for me anyhow)….being very honest they just didn’t do it for me. Their tunes were far too long & lost there narrative half way through. It was all a bit ‘nue-vo-gallimh’ for my style. But in fairness to them they got the crowd going (well at least there own crew anyway).

All in all it was a very successful night with a full house. We’ll forget the part where the ‘rock & roll’ dude decided to start a bust up & we all ran out of town. I’ll finish by saying that I don’t think I will be running back to Brandon’s but you’ll certainly see me at the next N.Y.R. gig – rain, hail or shine………….best of luck lads……onwards & upwards."

Thanks Sue. Now on with our story.
