Soooo, ya wanna play QUAKE, huh?

Well, This page will get ya started in the right direction. Quake Lingo is a difficult thing to understand, with all the computer language and codings, its like html. It has to be EXACTLY correct or it wont work. Lemme guess, you have no clue about servers, gl quake, quakeworld, gamespy or anything, right? Well if ya do, great, if not this will help newbs and I'm gonna provide it in plain english. No BS technical mumbo jumbo you always find with quake pages.

First of all, This is not a cure all and what I write here can get ya started in the right direction. But as long as we will eternally have different operating systems, different hardware, and ultamately different setups, I cant guarante that anything will work. But I dont mind helping with the knowledge I have. You scratch my back I'll scratch yours.

Okay, first things first. If you find this page helpful you can help me by annoying a guy called MAC-THE-GUN. His Quake server is called OLD-WORLD-HPB and his server address is 65.117.140.6:27540. He is a pussy quake player that camps quads, has them all timed, and plays the same 2 maps over and over again so he can do it. Watch, just die by a quad and stay dead. He will appear literally like 3 seconds after quad re appears. So, go call him a pussy and say Tails owns him. Hehe But prepare to get banned cuz he has opps. A little heckling never hurt anyone!!! : )

INSTALLING QUAKE AND QUAKEWORLD

Okay, anyway, on with the help pages... First thing you need to know is get quake. Shareware is highly not recommended, go buy one off ebay for $5 or try and download it somewhere. Second thing is download quakeworld2.30 and install it to your quake directory. Next you'll probably need the update patch that makes your Quake (Or quakeworld I forget, doesnt matter) Up to date with the latest (and last) version. That's quake1.08. Install the Quake, install both the patch and quakeworld. (I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter what order as long as quake is in and works.)

Quake - Go buy it ya cheap bastard!

INSTALLING GLQUAKE

Okay, Next you want gl quake? It seriously improves graphics, but you must have a 3dfx card, or compatable!!! If not, try it and see. Download it to your quake directory. You NEED to delete the open32gl.dll file!!! If you dont, you'll likely get a gfx.wad error. You also NEED to change the command line. I would attempt to connect to gl quake through your c:\quake (icon should be there if you unzipped it correctly) directory. If you wanna make a shortcut, add shortcut to your desktop, but you MUST change the commandline! Right click icon if you have win me or higher, there should be a command line there that says something like \quake.exe. You gotta change that to glquake.exe and it should work. (See Gamespy below for resolution and devoting ram to your gameplay)

INSTALLING ID GAMMA PATCH

I would highly recommend an ID Gamma patch, It changes your color platelette. Not essential, but seriously brightens the colors in the game. Definately worth it. Did for glquake, what glquake did for quake. Download it to your desktop, and run it once. Make sure your 3d card is good and gl runs fine before running, and you will probably need a decent monitor to be able to see the difference. But one you do, you will thank me!

SOME INTERESTING GL COMMANDS

Some interesting gl commands: Type in console <`> key (when in glquake, omit < > and ( ).)

gl_lightmap (1,0) Turns map walls white. (1)
gl_flashblend (1,0) Lights quad and rocket flashes. WARNING! This command will seriously lag your internet play!!! Keep it off for online gaming. (Keep at 1)
r_mirroralpha (0, 0.3, 0.8, 1) Turns stained glass into a mirror. (0 is full mirror)
r_novis (0,1) Needed for transparent water. (set to 1 for water transparency)
r_wateralpha (0, .3, .8, 1) Alters water opacity. (0 = clear)

GAME SERVERS

Okay, now you should be up and running. Looking for game servers to play on? Well I recomend mine. Its called The Oracle and its a matador mod. You get random runes that give simple powers, strength, regerate, vamp, speed etc. Plus you get a grappling hook and my favorite, the sniper rifle. Not alot to download, but it can all be done by conencting to the server ip address, or through gamespy. The IP is:

68.69.67.112:27500

You would pull down the console (`) and type this exactly without the (). (connect 68.69.67.112:27500) The first part is the persons ip address, the second is the default port. (27500) What? you dont have gamespy?

INSTALLING GAMESPY FOR SERVERS

Okay, well just go to www.gamespy.com and download either gamespy3d, or gamespy arcade. I personally recommend 3d. So, just download to your desktop and load it like any other program, it will search for any games on your computer. It should tell you it finds quakeworld, and you gotta do 2 things: (1) right click quakeworld in the left hand column, and select update master servers. It will tell you whos on what servers you can connect to. There are mods out there (Different versions of the same game) If you connect to any other mod other than qw, or dm (deathmatch), you'r computer will take some time to download some additional files to play that specific mod. Teamfortress, ctf (capture the flag), matador, rune, requiem, or arena are a few. The second thing you should do is change the command line. (As you did before) But its listed under file|games and filters|quake (specify quake should be c:\quake)|quakeworld|commandline. Click this and your command line should read (glqwcl.exe) You can also add the resolution or devote ram to your gameplay, like this: (glqwcl.exe -width xxx -heigth xxx -heapsize xxxxxx) Where as x represents the screen size res you want (example 320 x 480) and heapsize is = to the amount or ram you want to devote. Half your ram is recommended. (example 128000)

QUAKE SERVER

So Now you want your own server right? WELL GOOD LUCK!!! HEHE Just kidding. Well, you can start by getting qwsv.exe. Put it in your c:\quake directory . You can start then type connect localhost in your quake game and you will be connected to your own quake server. Run priority.exe after qwsv.exe has started to devote your system resources to the server (And others ping) rather than just your gameplay. You need a server.cfg that tells the server how many max players, timelimit, what maps to cycle through, etc. You write that in a txt document and save as "server.cfg" and put it in your c:\quake\qw folder. More information can be found on server commands, just do a search for "quake console commands".

DEFINITIONS

Okay, just some common Quake definitions for New b's.

If someone calls you a "LLAMA" OR "QUAD LLAMA":
(1) Slang - Loser, dork, geek. He is most likely making fun of you or your playing style.

If someone calls you a "QUAD GOBBLER":
(1) Slang Verb - You are likely timing quad regeration, it can be considered camping. (2) Mac-the-Gun

CAMPER/CAMPING
(1) Verb - One who stands at a respawn spot, powerup item, or generally guarding any likely spot a player is likely to be for the sole purpose of killing that person and attaining higher frags.

CHEAP
(1) Noun - One who plays unfair, also known to be accompanied by "bastard", as in, "CHEAP BASTARD!" and is generally considered bad form. (2) Mac-the-Gun (3) Bunny Hopping

Bunny Hopping is a glitch in the game quake. If you tweak the settings, the strafe keys and jump all at the same time you can get a speed advantage over other players. It is generally considered an "acceptable skill", although I personally think its a cheap way to pawn more frags off people and claim your better than them. : )
