OI! FOR ENGLAND

The Betrayed first came to the publics eye in 1987 on Skins & Punks vol 2,and then pretty much disappeared a year or so later. Here is a brief history of the band. The Betrayed formed in Folkstone,Kent in 1984,the first line up was:Steve Harrington-guitar,Mark Harrington-bass,Terry Davey-drums & Vince Denman-vocals.This line up recorded the first two demo's,both which were recorded at europa studios where the Last Resort recorded their 'Skinhead anthems' L.P.Vince Denman was replaced by Andy Gardiner and the band played a few local gigs, which although were packed out, usually ended in violence. One gig in particular was when they supported Condemned 84.Some of the bands crew picked a fight with some rather large skinheads which resulted in a hasty exit for the Betrayed. The band were also getting some unwanted attention from various political fanzines at this point because of some of their lyrical content, something the band tried to distance themselves from.Around this time Roddy Moreno of the Oppressed fame was starting to release his infamous 'Skins & Punks' Split l.p's and the Betrayed appeared on volume 2 with Scottish skunks 'Oi Polloi'.Although the band thought the sound was a bit rough,it went on to sell 3000 copies in its first year!A new guitarist-Dave Bishop-was added to the line up and soon the bands sound got better and more punky sounding. They recorded another demo and sent it to Link records, which resulted in one track on the 'Oi thats what i call music' L.P.At this point the band started to fall apart, with vocalist Andy getting the elbow, and guitarist Dave disappeared due to...er,troubles! They carried on for a while longer under a new name-The Snarl ups-and changed direction musically, being inspired by the likes of Agnostic front,Cro mags etc.Getting a decent vocalist to go with the new sound was becoming a problem,so much so that they recorded a 10 track demo without a singer! Eventually the band came to an end with various members drifting off into marriage etc, whilst Steve went on to form Ska/Reggae band Intensified a few years later. And so endeth the story of The Betrayed.
