NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

Gary Owens, Sir...

Sir Harrison Alfred Andrews' Review of We Were Soldiers Gary Owens, Sir drew worthy comment from Bill Staffa a veteran from Springfield, Virginia:

"I enjoyed the comments about `We were soldiers ...'

"Gary Owens is actually all one word. Garryowen is the "motto" of the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. `Garryowen' is two Irish words, componded. It means `Garden of Owen' and is the name of the Regimental March of the 7th Cavalry."

"The Garden of Owens which inspired Ireland's most popular, rollicking folk song is located in Limerick County, near the City of Limerick. Owen's garden was a general rendezvous for simple amusement but later became famous for scenes of strife commemorated by some inglorious mistrel of the day."

"GarryOwen is also the Regimental March of `The Royal Irish Regiment.'"

"We were soldiers ...". is probably the first movie about Vietnam that I've found credible.

One veteran saw the movie, and is glad he did!

Sir Harry Responded:

Gary Owens is rendered it as it was rendered by the ICD in my time in the army. ICD's history and music was the envy of the entire army.

You are correct the real "gari owens" was not a person but a field in or near Dublin known to the Royal Irish Fussiliers.

(Gary Owens or gary owens? There is no distinction between upper and lower case in Gaelic as Gaelic like early Latin had no lower case.)

I don't believe it is one word in gaelic. Gari meaning fields in gaelic is probably related to latin agri from which the English word agriculture is derrived.

ICD also had another official song "Sgt Flynn."

The luckless 7th was in my time altogether in ICD. Today they have restored the regiment itself to regimental status.

"The CAV" has an excellent though small museum at Fort Hood Texas and it has one of those units that goes on tour in the traditional uniforms with sabres and wagon trains.

GARY OWENS and SGT FLYNN were listed as the 7th's official regimental marching tunes as early as 1907.

GARY OWENS is also the official marching tune of the Rainbow Division (Gangster Regiment): 42nd INF NYANG

You might try GO TELL IT TO THE SPARTANS. A fairly decent movie about Vietnam, Spartans is based upon a Robin Moore story about MAC.

Also, be sure to read my review of High Crimes

Sir Harry has promised to review Windtalkers. He says it gives him an opportunity to inveigh with his usual bugaboos: arm chair liberals and squeamish anti-fascists who believe WW II was won by a series of UN resolutions.
