Journal of a Living Lady  #46

Nancy White Kelly

There is a full moon this week. I grew up in a more naïve time when monsters and werewolves were fun-filled terror. Charles Lester, my older brother, and I knew the plots of all the black and white scary movies. Our favorite was The Thing which we must have watched a hundred times. I now own a video copy plus the more modern version in color.

The first version was a classic. My heart always pounded just before the partially thawed Thing pounded down the door. Maybe that is why I have heart palpitations to this day. Guess they have never done a scientific study of the long term side-effects of Grade B movies. Can’t you see the ominous warnings: “Those subjected to repeated showings have contracted  King Kongitis and Frankensteinasia. A few have died from Mummification.”

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a movie star. Later I discovered there was already a starlet named Nancy Kelly. She was before my time, perhaps in the silent movie era. Hollywood would go out of business if they counted on me now. Modern movies are too sensualistic, gory, and exalt the occult. Buddy and I went to the see The Exorcist many years ago and were scared out of our wits. We vowed to ourselves to NEVER attend a movie like that again.

Yet, the old scary movies and the Hitchcock tales on television were entertaining, maybe even educational. I learned a lot from those old plots.

If lost, never turn off a paved road onto a gravel one.

If you are in foggy woods and feel creepy, consider that the rustling you hear in the bushes is not a bunny rabbit.

Don’t ever search the basement, particularly if the power has gone out.

Empty towns are probably deserted for a reason.

Get in the shower and get out.
