Violence in Ethiopia Drows Attention to Somalis' PlightJigjiga, 27 July, 2005 --Terrorist attacks in eastern Ethiopia this week have drawn attention to the plight of ethnic Somalis living in Ethiopia's Somali region, where opposition groups have accused Ethiopia's government of massive human rights abuses over the last decade, including hundreds of killings and disappearances In Iimay, Godey, Raaso and Fiq Zones. Matt Bryden, Horn of Africa director for the International Crisis Group, says the ONLF might have its share.
There are several Ethiopian opposition groups operating in the Somali Zone area, including the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), al-Ittihad Fii Ogadenia, an Islamist organization linked to al-Qaida, according to experts. |
Blasts kill five in east Ethiopia Jigjiga:, July 26, 2005 (JNA) -
Mr Jamil said the attacks had been carried out by the region's Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebels.
Four of the deaths occurred when grenades were thrown at a night-club.
Eyewitnesses in Jigjiga said they had heard gunshots before the grenades and other explosive devices were thrown.
In Dhagahbuur, officials confirmed that the child of a senior official died when a grenade blew up his house.

Jigjiga (Xarunta Dhexe SomaliGalbeed), June 22, 2005 (WIC)- The Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO) accused members of the ruling party of harassing voters and police of arresting opposition members in the run up to the polls. One of EHRCO's observers was threatened with death while others had to flee for their safety from some polling stations, the organisation said in its latest report.

ROME/ADDIS ABABA, 8 January 2003, -- More than 11 million people in Ethiopia are facing serious food shortages and possible starvation, following a prolonged dry spell that led to a poor harvest in many parts of the country, according to a joint report released today by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
