FRETWORK is considered fine scroll-saw work and excludes traditional marquetry and inlaying techniques. This type of wood work primarily involves sawing many inside openings to create ornamental or grill-like objects. Basic fretwork techniques and recognizable special tools can be traced back to the early 1700's and have not changed much since then. Fretwork overlays have been found in Egyptian tombs from 3000 years ago. Fretwork designs were often incorporated into the furniture designs of Duncan Phyfe, Thomas Chippendale and others.
