MEKO® 140 LIGHT FRIGATE

The MEKO 140 is a general-purpose light frigate of approx. 1800 t. full load displacement, designed for worldwide operation under climatic condition ranging from tropical to subartic.

It is fitted with an all-diesel propulsion plant driving twin shaft, fitted with fixed pitch propellers.

Top speed around 27 knots.

A flight deck designed to take a Westland WG 13 "sea Lynx" helicopter hangar is available as an option.

The ship is fitted with a comprehensive range sensors for air, surface and underwater targets> The data form these sensors is fed into a digital data handling system, which produces raw and synthetic combat information for the command.

This combination of sensors and operational data-handling system, in conjunction with the comprehensive external communications system, makes the MEKO 140 particularly suitable for surveillance and control of the EEZ, and for employment as a command ship for OPV,s operating in such a zone.

The main surface-to-surface armament consists of 4 x Exocet MM38 guided missiles.

The dual-purpose gun armament consists of 1 x 76 mm and 2 x twin 40 mm guns. The 76 mm gun can be used for the engagement of surface targets then the use of surface-to-surface missiles would be unnecessary or inappropriate, and also for naval gunfire support.

The ship is equipped to carry lightweight AS torpedoes, which can be launched either from the embarked helicopter or from the shipboard triple torpedo tubes.

Particular attention has been paid in the design to all aspects of survivability, including active survivability through the use of heavy defensive armament, passive survivability through the use of deception and decoy systems, and damage control to reduce the effects of action damage.

A particular feature of the design is the application of the MEKO/FES concept, which consists of the use of a standard ship platform which can befitted with a variable outfit of modularized weapon and electronic systems.

The use of this system brings advantages in the building, refitting and modernization phases; in particular it provides a unique capability to adapt the armament to new operational or technical development by replacement of modularized weapon and electronic systems.

MISSIONS

The MEKO 140 is designed to carry out the following missions:

Sea control and surveillance
Surface warfare operations
Anti-submarine operations
Naval gunfire support

Associated with the above missions is the requirement for self-defense against air attack.

The MEKO 140 has in relation to its size a particularly strong anti-aircraft armament.
