Biography: Terry Brooks was born in Illinois in 1944. He received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College, majoring in English litterature, and his graduate degree from The School of Law at Washington & Lee University. As a writer since highschool, he published his first book, The Sword of Shannara in 1977. It was the first work of fiction to appear on the New York Times trade paperback bestseller-list, remaining there for five months. Terry Brooks was practicing attorney for many years, but he now writes full-time. He lives with his wife, Judine Brooks, in the Pacific Northwest.
