B. Many of the points I make in my essay were borrowed from or inspired by the links above.
C. One point I forgot to mention: Wal-Mart hurts bands, too. Anyone can sell Mariah Carey or Smash Mouth. It takes a more willing and music-knowledgeable store to help new bands break out. It's tough to compete against Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. Also, it is these big stores who set many of the standards, forcing band to compromise their artistic styles if they want the selling status provided by Wal-Mart.
D. Sam Walton was not only a predator, but a liar. He once swore to the wife of board member that a.) No Wal-Mart would ever open on Sunday (but now many are open 24/7) and b) That Wal-Mart would never sell alcohol (but is now nearly number one, if not number, in national beer sales).
E. Whenever a commercial for Wal-Mart, Target, Menard's, Lowe's, The Home Depot, or a few other stores comes on TV, I change the channel, or at least hit the mute button.
