BABA DO An edgy studio project devised & headed by Andre & drummer/Percussionist Barry van Zyl.
ii PINKABONGO MUSIC PUBLISHING: A Music Publisher representing a growing number of local composers.
PINKABONGO MUSIC PUBLISHING is also the Southern African Sub-Publisher for UK based Media Music Publishers, JW MEDIA MUSIC.
iii AMALUME PRODUCTIONS: A Production Company that provides Artist Development, Pre & Post Production Services.
iv AFRIKA FLAVA MANAGEMENT SERVICES: Provides some management infrastructure & services for artists & composers.
1951
Andre was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He studied violin for 4 years from the age of five.
He left South Africa with his parents in late 1964 & spent his teenage years in then newly independent Zambia.
In Chingola, Zambia, he began playing guitar & but quickly moved to the electric bass, which became his main instrument. His played in his school band & the odd illicit gig in a bar in town !
1970
He finished his secondary education in Zambia & went England to continue his studies. He eventually started playing professionally in London in the early seventies (a sometimes typical story!).
1971-1974
He worked with exiled South African musicians such as DUDU PUKWANA, MONGEZI FEZA, LOUIS MOHOLO & West African musicians such as Ghanaian Afro-Rock group OSIBISA, Nigerian Percussionist/Drummer & band leader REMI KABAKA, TRAFFIC Percussionist REBOP KWAKU BA & many others, doing both live work, touring UK & Europe & as a studio session player.
1975
Due to passport problems Andre returned to Zambia & attempted to complete his degree in Psychology & Computer Science. He worked with many Zambian artists such as Afro-Rock outfit MADZI A MOYO, Singer/Guitarist JOSI NDLOVU/MUSONDA, Drummer/Percussionist PETER LUNGU, Singer/Guitarist RIKKI ILLILONGA, Playwright & Theatre Director MASAUTSO PHIRI.
1977
He went to Lagos, Nigeria, working with musicians and artists such as FELA KUTI BAND Drummer TONY ALLEN, & many other musicians from West Africa.
1979
He returned to Zambia for a short spell. After touring Botswana as keyboard player/bassist with MADZI A MOYO he went to Cape Town.
1980
He stayed on in Cape Town & worked with many top South African musicians such as WINSTON MANKUNKU, MONTY WEBER, EBRAHIM SCHILDER, SYLVIA …., HILTON SCHILDER, EZRA NCQUKANA, MERTON BARROW, TOM FOX, LEONEL BASTOS, BRIGHT BLUE, ASHIKO, in the studio & in live performance.
1986
He left South Africa for Germany to co-produce and co-write for German based Zambian singer ANNA MWALE .
He worked in Munich for 18 months with various musicians including a long stint in a band featuring Trinidadian Steel Pan player MIGUEL BARRADAS.
1987
Andre left Munich for London to look for better musical prospects. He worked with Aki Nawaz of Nation Records & various other small recording ventures. He eventually procured a media music publishing deal with JW Media Music Publishing.
1991
Andre returned to South Africa & started working with many top South African musicians such as, PAUL HANMER, PRINCE LENGOASE, JETHRO SHASHA, E’SMILE, PROPHETS OF DA CITY, MIKE MAKHALEMELE, LOUIS MCHLANGA, BARRY VAN ZYL, GLORIA BOSMAN, MCOY MRUBATA, YVONNE CHAKA CHAKA, IAN HERMAN, BAYETE, JOHANNES KERKORREL, JOHNNY CLEGG, in the studio & in live performance.
