Tom Manning and Robert
Paver
(Medical Center for Federal Prisoners,
Springfield, MO)
Robert Paver (a.ka. "Paver"; pronounced
as in roadpaver or pavement) was in the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners
for treatment. He had a life expectancy of 6-12 months there.
Tom Manning and other inmates attempted to lobby with the "friendly" staff
at the medical facility to gain support for a compassionate early release.
But we couldn't get it together in time. Paver was paralyzed
on his right side (limbs, intestines, verbal, etc.) with Huntington's Disease.
We could see his daily deterioration. So we started going beyond
being just buddies and making sure his needs - personal and environmental
hygiene, etc.- were being addressed. Tom Manning was transferred
back to Leavenworth in October, he received word that Paver died on November
4, 2002 from fellow inmates. It is believed that Paver had an adverse
reaction to an enima given, that he passed out and vomitted in his sleep.
He choked on it and by the time someone checked on him - Paver was dead.
