Chapter Two *Later that night*

Joey reached over and slightly touched Katherine's shoulder, shaking her lightly to wake her up since they had arrived home. It hadn't surprised him to see her asleep when he had pulled into his driveway because it always happened whenever he took her to visit the guys. "Come on, Kat..you need to wake up sweetie."

She sighed before turning away from him and snuggling against the seat. Joey laughed before pulling the keys out of the ignition, knowing that he was going to have to carry her to her room. Once he had her small body tightly against his chest, he made his way to the front door. It wasn't an easy task of inserting the key with a young child in your arms, but he was an expert at it because he had done it many times.

He made his way up the stairs and put her in her bed, pulling the comforter tightly around her body so that she wouldn't get cold. He pressed his lips to her forehead before stroking her cheek. "Goodnight, Kat..sleep tight."

Once he had turned out the light, he walked back down the hall and made his way into their bedroom, not expecting to see Samara sitting at the vanity he had bought her. "Why aren't you in bed, Sam?"

"Joey, I get tired of laying there all day. I needed to get up and somehow I made my way over here," she said as her fingers trailed over the cool metal. "I've always loved this thing."

"I know you have," he said as he walked over and began massaging her shoulders. "That's why I bought it for you."

"I want Katherine to have it when she gets older..that way she can put all her make up and other items on it."

Joey leaned over and placed a soft kiss below her ear, smiling when he heard her let out a pleasant sigh. She turned around on the stool before standing up and slipping her arms around his waist. "Joe..I need you," she said in a voice barely above a whisper.

"Are you sure?" he asked as he kissed the tip of her nose while his hands came to rest on top of hers.

"I'm not dead yet, Joe..of course I want this," she joked before pushing him towards the bed.

"That's not something to joke about," he mumbled as his lips found hers. His hands moved up her body finally coming to rest in her hair, that luckily hadn't fallen out when she had went to radiation treatment. He picked her up and laid her on the bed before allowing his body to rest slightly on top of hers. His lips made a trail of kisses down her neck column, slightly sucking on the sensitive flesh.

His hands had just found the hem of her pajama shirt when they both heard Katherine say, "Mommy...will you come tuck me in..daddy doesn't do it right."

Joey groaned before rolling off of Samara so she could get up. "Of course I will Katherine," she said as she smiled at Joey and walked over to her daughter, taking her small hand into hers. As he watched the two of them walk through the bedroom door, he sighed when he realized that eventually there would be no more mother-daughter moments between the two of them. He leaned back on the bed and waited for Samara to come back to him so he could hold her in his arms and let her know that his love would always be there for her.

*In Katherine's room*

Samara smiled lovingly at her daughter as she bent over and kissed her cheek. "You need to get some sleep, young lady..I know all your uncles have worn you out."

"Uncle Chris cheated today," she said as her face scrunched in a yawn. "But I caught him."

"That sounds like Chris..I'm going to go now sweetie..you get some sleep," Samara said as she reached over and turned off the lamp that sat on a small table beside Katherine's bed.

"Mommy..what's wrong with you?"

Samara had been heading towards the door but froze when her daughter asked that question. She sighed before walking back over to the bed and sitting on the edge. "I'm very sick, sweetie."

"Are you going to be all right?"

Samara bit her lip to fight back the tears that were threatening to fall. She wouldn't cry in front of her daughter. "I don't think so sweet heart..but always remember that your mom loves you very much."

"I love you too, Mommy."

"Get some sleep pumpkin," she said as a tear fell down her cheek. She stood up and turned around to see Joey leaning against the door frame. Once Samara had closed the door to Katherine's room, she fell into Joey's arms and sobbed on his shoulder. "I don't want to leave her, Joe."

Joey stroked her hair and whispered the only comforting words that he knew to say. "Its going to be OK baby."

"No, its not, Joe! Can't you see that? You're going to be the one who gets to experience her growing up...I have to let her go and only watch her..ITS NOT FUCKING OK!" she yelled before jerking away from him.

"Samara," he said as he stepped towards her, wanting to wrap his arms around her and provide the type of comfort that he had promised to do the day they had been married.

"Don't try and comfort me, Joey. You're words don't help the fact that I'm slowly dying. Each day brings me closer to the end..why can't you understand that?" she angrily yelled at him as her eyes seemed to burn wholes into his.

"Samara! Keep your voice down so you don't wake up Katherine."

"Maybe that little girl in there could understand the situation more than you seem to! You keep acting as if everything is Ok..damn it Joe..its not!"

"What do you want me to do?" he yelled back as his body began to shake in anger. "Do you want me to break down in front of you and tell you that I'm scared to death each fucking moment I walk around this house? I love you with every God damn thing inside of me and I can't lose you. I tell the guys this all the time..Samara..I..love you so much," he said as he slid down the wall, letting his body rest on the floor.

She moved over to him, letting her own body slide down the wall so she could sit beside him. "You're going to get through this, Joe..we all are."

"I can't do it," he whispered as he felt her rest her head on his shoulder.

"You have to..you have to do it for Katherine."

"But I can't do it, Sam," he said as slowly let down the tough facade that he had surrounded himself with ever since they had found out she had cancer. "You're so much stronger and braver than me."

"You're going to be able to do this, Joe," she said as she closed her eyes. That moment had been what they had needed. Samara had needed to know how scared Joey actually was, and it took being pushed for Joey to be able to admit just how scared he was. Now that they knew what the other person was feeling, they were now going to be able to be there for the other through the precious time that she had left.
